And the Winner of Nerdly Strikes Back Is…
/A little more than a month ago, we asked you to build a Nerdly—any type, any inspiration—and wow, did you all deliver! Knowing there is a Nerdly army of bespectacled and studly cubes out there just warms us to the core, and we think it was a great way to celebrate that BrickNerd is back!
Judging this contest was HARD because of how awesomely varied the submissions were. It was like walking through a modern art gallery! We had to deliberate quite a few times, and each BrickNerd contributor had an equal vote. Ultimately we concentrated on a few key criteria: 1) Does it convey that Nerdly feeling through concept and execution? And 2) Are the glasses, square shaping, color or studs on top conveyed in an entertaining way?
Honorable Mentions
These are just a few of the stand-out entries that came close to winning. BrickNerd contributors had to conduct three rounds of voting because the votes were so tight! We’ve included comments on each submission in the official contest gallery, but we were in awe of these models.
From the Star Wars entries (though we promise this wasn’t a Star Wars thing!), to the colorful creativity, to the modulars and a polaroid camera, and even to one entry being a little sus—all of these stood out as saying, “I’ll be back!” The BrickNerd HQ was quite a touching tribute to our past, even including the classic background that Tommy used when filming videos in the interior. Bravo!
Third Place: BRIXE63 - Nerdly Was Here
Our third-place prize goes to BRIXE63 for their incredible “Nerdly Was Here” featuring tagged glasses on a brick wall. The size of this is deceptive, and thinking about all the math that went into figuring out how to angle those plates, tiles and slopes that make up the black glasses and the drip of paint makes our heads hurt. And then they had the audacity to cover up some of that amazing work with a ladder! We applaud the effort and storytelling and for making this seem so easy! Your $50 toward the LEGO Shop Online, a BrickNerd swag box, and a Golden Nerdly trophy are well earned!
Second Place: Slawek Kaczorowski - DIY Nerdly
Our second-place prize goes to Slawek Kaczorowski for his “DIY Nerdly” featuring a sprue of Nerdly parts, painting supplies and other tools. We love how this build represents taking a creative approach, studying each element individually and getting nerdy about the subject! There is some NPU in particular with the tools and sprue connections. This model embodies the fact you can build and customize your Nerdly exactly however you want—which to us represented what we want BrickNerd to continue being. Enjoy $100 toward the LEGO Shop Online, a BrickNerd swag box, and a Golden Nerdly trophy!
First Place: Scott Wilhelm - Nerdly Art Gallery
Our first-place prize goes to Scott Wilhelm for his stunning “Nerdly Art Gallery” featuring not one but EIGHT Nerdlies in four different artistic styles. From left to right, the bold color blocking of the Warhol-esque squares was done expertly, the flattened and heightened perspective of Picasso’s cubism makes us look twice, the Dali-inspired melting Nerdlies melted our brains with the perspective and wondering how deep the painting actually goes, and finally, the Monet-like pointillism is simplicity at its finest. We would be honored to hang any of these on our wall if that were possible! Congratulations on winning our Nerdly Strike Back contest, $200 toward the LEGO Shop Online, a BrickNerd swag box, and theGolden Nerdly trophy!
Congratulations to all of the winners! We will be in contact about your prizes soon.
Contributor Contest
But wait, there’s more! In addition to the public contest, our own BrickNerd contributors wanted to join in the Nerdly fun. Here are their entries, all competing for a Golden Nerdly trophy (as chosen by their Nerd-in-Chief). You might see some of these pop up around the site on our About Us page and in other upcoming features!
Congratulations to Bart Larrow, Jr. (aka El Barto) for his “FebROVERy Bonsai Nerdly!” I can think of no greater expression for BrickNerd’s love of the LEGO fan community, questionable humor, intriguing randomness, and creative building. In this single entry, Bart has built a Nerdly, a bonsai tree for Brickset’s contest, and a rover for FebRovery—embodying our community-first approach at BrickNerd like no other. Your Golden Nerdly trophy is in the mail!
