Instructions to Build a Classic LEGO Sports Car

Andrea Lattanzio (Norton74) is no stranger to BrickNerd. He’s shared some behind-the-scenes views of his builds from a rickety bridge with a bear to a blue cottage. In today’s guest article, he shares a story and some instructions to build a classic LEGO sports car that looks a lot like a Ford Mustang.

Americana Bar Find

This white/black classic sports car (which is supposed to look like a hardtop Mustang) was featured in my Americana Barn Find diorama. I enjoyed taking “step by step” instructions pictures which are included at the end of this article. But first, here is a bit more about the build.

The story in my mind goes like this:

“This classic first-series Mustang Hardtop had been recently discovered in an old barn. The bearded farmer is showing the little treasure to the young car hunter, wearing a black leather jacket. Despite the fact it was recovered in a dusty shed, the machine looks in great shape with all the details in the right place. Once out of the barn, a mechanic came over to try to start the engine. The Mustang probably needs only a new battery.”

Called “Americana” the diorama features all the details you’d expected to see in a scene like that: an old barn with chickens and pigs scratching around, old spare parts and tyres, a rusty 50s gas pump and other stuff all around. Last but not least “The Star-Spangled Banner” flag waving proudly out of the shed.

The “hardtop” was the first version of the Mustang, introduced on April 17, 1964, together with the “convertible.” The “fastback” version went on sale a bit later in August 1964. I personally really like the hardtop design.

The Sports Car at the Shop

The Classic Sports Car was also featured in a shop with a bunch of grease monkeys who are going to fix it in a few minutes. It’ll be back in great shape, just as Ford built it.

The shop features all the stuff you need: a roller cabinet, a workbench with wrenches and vise, the pendant lights, the column drill press, air compressor, and a lot more.

Instructions for a Classic Sports Car

Here are all the parts you will need. You can also swap out the color if you want. The mudguards will likely be the most difficult piece to color-swap, but there are still quite a few colors available.

In this scrolling gallery, you can see the parts needed and instructions for each step to build the classic sports car.

If you would prefer single images to save or print out, here are the instructions laid out in a grid.

I hope you have as much fun building this car as I had designing it! You can follow me on my Flickr for more builds and instructions. Happy building!
