LEGO MOC Collages: What's Up With Those?

Funny, I was thinking the exact same thing. They’re kind of like holiday cards you send to your friends and relatives at the end of the year. But instead of showing off your visit to the second-largest ball of twine west of the Mississippi or your dog’s graduation certificate from obedience school, it’s all of your LEGO builds for the year. All in one place!

How long have people been doing this? Well, that’s a great question, and for a lack of a more precise answer, I’ll just say, for a long time—on Flickr in particular. (Check out Nannan Z’s comment after the article)

So, now that you know a little bit of the history and motivation for these collages flooding your favorite LEGO feeds, let’s check out a few, shall we?

We’ll kick things off with BrickNerd’s own prolific builder, Andreas Lenander. Some have speculated that he doesn’t sleep or that he has minions working 24/7. My own theory is that he has at least two clones. But we’ll leave that for a future article. How about we just admire the variety and quality of what he’s created in only a year. Wow!

This one’s a little different from the usual year-end MOC round-up. Jonas Wide has incorporated pictures of his builds and of himself from the LEGO Masters Sweden show. Exploding industrial compounds, tumbling towers, and the gratuitous politely-paying-attention-to-the-host shot. He’s also got swag from the Skærbæk fan weekend. Score!

Next we’ve got a nifty slide show of a few others I selected at random from my own feed with links to each builder.

So how do I do one of these for myself? I was afraid you’d ask that… Well, for starters, if you’ve got Photoshop or GIMP, you can just open a big blank layer, pick a complementary color, and start adding your pics, resizing as necessary. There’s also a nifty collage site called FotoJet we use here quite regularly.

That pretty much sums it up, BrickNerd fans! Even if you didn’t build a hundred and eleventy three MOCs this year or you weren’t on a TV show, it’s still fun to compile your LEGO accomplishments for the year to share with your pals or simply admire in your spare time.
