A Haunted Halloween Mystery

Halloween has come to our BrickNerd community! While the autumn is painting half the world in bright red, yellow and orange colors, several of our BrickNerd contributors are celebrating the spooky season of mystery and intrigue with a joint story.

To celebrate the season of mischief, Gwyneth, Keith and I prepared something special for you—a “Choose Your Own Adventure”-style story about a hidden danger. I started the story and passed it on to the next contributor who wrote the next chapter and built a scene out of LEGO from it. Where will the story go? What are our characters’ destinies? And what chilling tale about them will freeze your blood? Read on if you dare…

”Those Wonderful Eyes” by Ann Megacolormix

It has been a long time since my good friend John became part of those unbelievable events. Writing about his destiny, I'm leaving the readers to make their own conclusions. I hope you can throw light upon what is dark to me.

That memorable meeting took place in the hall of the Royal Academy. The gallery gave pleasure to John's aesthetic nature, but all the pictures were forgotten when he noticed an extremely beautiful woman standing at the other side of the room. Her wonderful eyes made me think about unusual strength of character and feminine softness.

There was a young man with this lady. I recognized him: Reeves was the life and soul of any party at our University. I supposed that Reeves' companion was his fiancée. John definitely looked upset when I shared this idea with him.

Two weeks later I heard strange news from John.

"Reeves' engagement is off! I think it's foolish of him. She's so nice... and the most unlucky girl in the world"!

Her name was Kate. Nobody knew where she came from. This was her second engagement. The first man seemed to go insane the day before the wedding... Now something happened to Reeves: he looked delirious and frightened, he was afraid to stay alone.

* * *

After the holidays my friend told me about his unexpected engagement. However, I knew her name even before John's explanation:

"The more I know Kate the more I admire her! I'll introduce you to her so that you can form your opinion".

But I couldn't understand this woman. There was an extraordinary mixture of steely hardness and tenderness in this little creature. Fear invaded my mind when we visited the famous mesmerist's show together.

"A mesmerized subject is entirely dominated by the will of the mesmerist,” the lecturer explained. “I'll choose one of the audience and make him do what I wish". With these words the lecturer fixed his eyes upon John who looked as a man of a nervous temperament. Under the influence, John was trying to stay in his seat... I was watching this scene with interest when I noticed the unusual expression on Kate's face. She was sitting with her eyes fixed intently upon the mesmerist with concentrated power in her features.

"I won't go on!” the lecturer said. “There is a stronger will than mine acting against me".

I waited outside the hall until my friend and the lady came out. John was laughing over his victory in this silent duel. I chose the right moment and said to the woman:

- "You did that, Miss Kate. Any will that has such power is dangerous"...

- "I know you don't like me, - she answered, and I was very surprised with this true accusation. - Don't interfere with me or you will see the real danger".

It was about three weeks before my friend's marriage. John remarked that Kate was going to tell him something important... When he returned, his face was deadly pale.

"My engagement is off. - he said. - It's too horrible. A vampire nature behind a lovely face! I'm saying more than I should. I have loved her too much to speak the truth. Don't go! - he suddenly cried. - I feel better when you're here. I'm safe from her then"...

My poor friend needed help. I travelled with him to the sea and it seemed to be a good medicine to John's mind. One night we were admiring the beautiful island and the endless sea. Suddenly John gave a cry and an expression of horror came over his pale face.

- "Look there! It’s her! She has come for me. Don't let me go!"

- "I don't see anybody. Come into the house"!

- "She told me she would come for me, and she keeps her word. I must go. I'm coming, Kate"!

I couldn't stop John and my friend ran into the darkness of the night. I followed him...

”I Hear Your Heartbeat” by Gwyneth Kozbial

I followed him at a healthy distance, running down a path I never noticed having been there before. The way became pitch black. We could not see our feet, but we didn't trip or falter. I could only hear John's feet running and my own labored breaths. We continued like clockwork for some time.

Finally, we came to a clearing, illuminated by the moon. I hid behind a tree as John slowed to a stumbling walk towards a figure.

Yes, in the spotlight, stood Kate. Her back was turned to us. She was dressed to the nines.

"I've come, my love!" John cried.

In an instant, Kate's form was upon him, embracing him, her face buried in his neck.

John sighed a happy sigh, then fell limp to the ground, as Kate released him.

She looked up in my direction, and I could see her true nature - the face she mesmerized all to never see.

"I hear your heartbeat," the face said in Kate's velvet voice. "It sounds delicious. I will come back for you another day."

Her eyes started spinning, and everything went black.

I woke up in bed, confused. Perhaps hungover?

I smelled pancakes. Pancakes? Oh, yes. My lovely fiancé makes the best pancakes.

"Happy birthday," she called from the kitchen. "I hear you waking! I can hear your heartbeat flutter faster from here."

She's such a thoughtful girl. I love her so.

“Siren of Cthulhu” by Keith Reed

...I tried as best I could to follow John into the darkness. His movement and speed were like nothing I’d seen before, possessed demon-like. Chasing him through neighborhood streets, through a park, even though a wooded area which would eventually lead out to a small secluded shoreline with a dock.

What I saw next was even stranger than the actions that had possessed John previously. A woman floating above the water at the end of the dock, who seemed to be calling to John… It wasn't till she moved in the glow of the full moon that I could see who it was…. A ghastly ghostly version of what seems to be Kate! With tentacles protruding out her back, she didn't have legs, just mist and smoke swirling around her lower half.

She spoke softly to him but her voice had a tinny haunting pitch to it, she said only three words to him.

He is waiting….

Happy Halloween!

By combining bricks and storytelling, these talented and passionate artists have collectively weaved a Halloween tale for you—and you can continue the story if you wish! Let us know your next chapter in the comments below.

I'd like to thank my dear friends Gwyneth and Keith for their amazing stories and very beautiful LEGO creations! They prepared the stories in the best traditions of horror and made them look good too. I really enjoyed this adventure!

This Halloween tale was actually inspired by "John Barrington Cowles", a story written by Arthur Conan Doyle. I recommend you to read about John—you will see that the ending really stays a mystery, and it's perfect for our imagination! Gwyneth and Keith perfectly guessed and created the atmosphere of this story and gave a new life to it.

Until next time, we wish you a happy Halloween!
