It seems no one can post a picture of a vaguely reptilian winged beast without a dragon vs wyvern debate starting up. I'm starting to wonder if we need a new word that encompasses all the beasts. Sort of like "bird" covers everything from eagles to finches. I don't know what that word may be, please feel free to comment below and nominate your word. In the mean time, please enjoy this "weast" (winged beast) by builder jaapxaap.

Blacksmith's Shop & The House Of Peer Rumstiek

Does anyone else hear medieval minstrel music when they look at castle MOCs? I mean, the moment I looked at this wonderful blacksmith's shop and tudor house by Sylon-tw, I heard music right out of Excalibur (not the Mozart stuff, the minstrel music). I realize that music shapes and colors my creative world, but I have to wonder if I'm alone in this phenomenon.

Forbidding Castle

The color palette on this castle diorama by builder ZCerberus is a little misleading. The warm, inviting colors of an almost fall-like setting draw you in, welcoming you. Then you take a closer look and realize this is not a friendly place, not friendly at all. The decrepit aging of the castle is really well done, with what looks like centuries of retrofits and kludged repairs. And I don't know what's going on in the water there, but I don't recommend fishing.

Winter Is Here

As anticipation of the final season of Game of Thrones builds, I expect we'll see a few more GOT inspired MOCs. These two beautifully built micro scale castles from Legopard are inspired by the mechanical ones in the opening credits of the epic series. The hardest part of viewing them is not hearing the theme song, and that nagging thought that we're still months away.

Königsfeld Manor

Welcome to Königsfeld Manor, in lovely Avalonia, Historica. Sometimes a parts shortage is all the inspiration you need for a brilliant solution, and sometimes that solution is better than the original plan. This lovely castle scene by builder MassEditor was originally going to have a pretty standard irregular border, but short of parts he came up with this very interesting "spilling over" border, which is the touch that makes this diorama really stand out.

Cyricus The Kingbreaker

Being a king isn't easy. First there's all the whining, about land disputes, taxes, arranged marriages, etc. Then there's the matter of the parades and public appearances, you know why they wave that way? Because they have to do it for hours and it gets tiring. Then there's the fact that it seems someone is always trying to kill you, and if not someone then something, like this big black dragon by Mark of Falworth. Personally, I like being the jester.

Secret Cottage in Farnor Forest

I believe that the secret in Farnor Forest is not actually the cottage, but the forest itself. Upon first glance the trees of the forest look to be standard fare, but look again and you will notice some very cool new designs. Realistic looking tree trunks have always been difficult to pull off and over the years many new techniques have been added to the collective design base. Builder Ben Tritschler has a shared a few new concepts with us including some some Ben 10 parts for the trunks of the larger trees and the mini shooters for the smaller ones.

Pyke Castle

We here at BrickNerd like to fashion ourselves as both fans of LEGO and Nerd culture, but every once-in-a-while there is a gap in our individual Nerdiness, in my case that gap is Game of Thrones. As guilty as I am for not enjoying GoT, I do enjoy a good castle and Pyke Castle by builder Anu Pehrson is simply phenomenal. The rock work is like nothing I have ever seen before and is what really makes this castle stand out for me.

BrickNerd LiveBuild - Disney Castle - Part 2

It's time for another round of Disney magic! Yesterday we started building the Disney Castle, and over the course of about 5 hours we managed to get just over half way done. It's a magnificent set, full of wonderful details and interesting techniques.

Join us today as we finish it. Building starts at 9am PST, see you then!

BrickNerd LiveBuild - Disney Castle - Part 1

We're huge Disney fans at our house. We go to Disneyland several times a year, we're Disney Vacation Club owners and we can't get enough of Begal BBQ and Dole Whips. Obviously we're also huge fans of LEGO (duh) so when those worlds collide you can bet we get excited. Join me and Mrs BrickNerd live for the next two days starting 9am PST as we build the new Disney Castle. It's going to be a magical time!

We're Going To Build The Disney Castle LIVE!

Me and Mrs BrickNerd were considering visiting Disneyland this weekend, but then this showed up in the mail. Yes, thanks to a little Disney magic, pixie dust and LEGO generosity we're bringing Disneyland to us. Yes, technically this is from Magic Kingdom in Florida, and we're west coasters, but we love Disney World too, just can't get there as often. This is going to be an epic build, so we're going to split it into two days. Starting this Friday, Sept 16th at 9am PST and continuing on Saturday at 9am PST we're going to tackle this mighty but magical set, join us!

Building at micro scale has it's challenges. Finding clever ways to create shapes and forms to create or suggest detail takes time and effort. This castle by Takkata1 has so much going on you just might overlook many of it's quirks and connections (even the name is clever). Luckily he produced a video where he deconstructs it before your eyes, and you can see just what crazy lengths he went to in it's construction. I'm sure a certain percentage of you will take issue with the large amount of parts that aren't connected, try to look past that and see just how much is going on here.

Qar Riva

I really like the Indian flavor of this beautiful castle MOC by builder Blufiji. As much as I enjoy castle builds, they tend to start to all look alike after a while, but not this one. The color combinations are appealing too, a nice break from so much grey. The landscaping, sand and lush oasis set the structure off nicely, making this a scene rich in texture and backstory.

Space Castle Mash-up

When I first saw the Nexo Knights theme, I was excited, because I figured people would jump on the whole medieval sci-fi genre. There haven't been many Nexo Knights MOCs yet, but this one by Dubbadgrim is exactly what I was hoping for. It combines castle elements, like the main wall and the landscaping on the base, with some cool science fiction parts, like the anti-aircraft gun and the robots. I wish we'd see mash-ups like this more often.

Falcon Shield

When going into battle, it's important to let the other guys, enemy or ally, know who you are or represent. You can fly your coat of arms or family symbol on banners, drapes on your horse, even your armor or tunic. But the best effect is on your shield, like this MOC by ~Brick, so when you use it to stop your enemy's blow, he knows who stopped it, and with any luck, you'll land your next blow.
