Nerdy About The Bricks
About a year in the making, this incredible rendition of the “pork burger” by Rogue Bantha is at 1/72 scale, and from what I can see looks pretty darn accurate. Yes, there’s two official sets at about this scale (well, quite a bit bigger), and you may have been temporarily confused when you saw this, but this one is hand crafted by a fan, and I’m a fan of that fan.
When Star Wars came out in 1977 I was 9 years old, the perfect age to be warped for life. I can remember scouring every issue of Starlog, Cinefex, Cinefatastiqe and every other magazine and book I could find. Images like this scene, brilliantly recreated by Konrad Aksinowicz fueled my imagination and ignited my passion for visual effects and filmmaking. The creative geniuses at ILM have always been heroes of mine, and paved the way for me and entire generation of anonymous craftspeople making movie magic behind the scenes.
The moment I laid eyes on this magnificent Super Star Destroyer by Fabrice Neaud I heard the Imperial March in my head and I was ready to swear allegiance to the Empire. It’s not the scale that impresses me (to be honest, scale rarely impresses me, but this thing is enormous) it’s the accuracy and the attention to detail. This picture does not do it justice, you really need to click though and look at the pics at high res to truly appreciate this beast.
Check out this lovely beast by builder Jarac. The Y-Wing has always been a favorite of mine, just because it’s so “scrappy”. It was designed to look like a ship that had seen some action. It's outside cladding had been removed so many times that it was eventually decided it wasn’t worth the hassle. It also looked like it could take some punishment, and had dished out a fair amount too.
The AT-ST (All Terrain Scout Transport) or “chicken walker” started it’s life in the Star Wars universe as a thing of legend. It was in a single shot in The Empire Strikes Back, blink and you missed it, and in the days before home video there were plenty of people who did. I remember heated debates of its existence among my nerdy friends shortly after the movie came out. Of course not long after it became a fan favorite, and when Jedi came out it featured prominently. This is version three by builder GolPlaysWithLego, and it gets better with each iteration.
The Star Wars franchise knows how to provide cannon fodder for the good guys. Tie fighters and Stromtroopers from the original trilogy and to a degree so far the sequel trilogy. The prequels gave us battle droids, who also attempted to provide a bit of humor. Hachiroku24 has built excellent renditions of the standard battle droid. Best of all video instructions are provided on YouTube! The droid uses mostly common pieces, and has a ton of articulation. My favorite part is the minifig scale battle droid arm as a neck.
It’s far too early in the morning and I haven’t had nearly enough tea to have my mind so completely blown by a MOC. I knew what this scene by builder Grantmasters was the moment I saw the thumbnail, but just look at the scale of it! I mean Jabba’s throne room in surprising detail in a package about 10 x 14. I also love that the genesis of this creation was the fact that the hat was reminiscent of Jabba, brilliant.
It was the first ship ever seen in the Star Wars universe, it carried the droids to Tattooine, the ship that Princess Leia was captured on. It’s the Tantive IV, AKA the Rebel Blockade Runner, and it’s the newest large LEGO Star Wars ship. LEGO was kind enough to send one our way and here’s our review of one of the most iconic science fiction ships to ever burst onto the silver screen.

There’s a lot to unpack here with Tim Lydy’s first Star Wars build. It started simply enough, with a trench battle featuring the pretty spiffy Mimban Stormtroopers. But it grew in size, and then the Emperor was added, then with the addition of the aurebesh title (for the empire) it has taken on almost a propaganda type feel, and it’s pretty amazing. While I’m not much of a prequel fan I can say this, if you can get through all the silliness of Phantom Menace and get to the end, you’re gonna see a great lightsaber fight. This was the first time the fans saw some serious Jedi-in-their-prime and total-kick-ass-Sith crossing sabers, and it was pretty bad ass. In fact I’m guessing from the title of this post you’ve had John Williams’ score in your head and you’ve been hearing the humming of lightsabers while you’ve been enjoying this MOC by LEGO 7, amiright?
When The Force Awakens came out pretty much everyone went BB-8 crazy. I mean that little bugger was EVERYWHERE. Well I’d like to introduce you to the next big thing, D-O. We don’t know much about this little guy, with the exception of how damn cute he is, but you can bet he’ll be on Slurpee cups and bags of carrots soon enough. This version by Takamichiii showed up in record time after his reveal during Star Wars Celebration.
There have been no shortages of X-Wings built from LEGO, both official sets and fan made. It’s one of the most popular ships in the Star Wars universe so it’s no wonder. So you would think with so many built I would be totally over them, but I still get giddy when I see one. And when it’s as good as this awesome rendition of Luke’s starfighter by Swan Dutchman, I want to lock S-foils in attack position, if you know what I mean.
So there you are, on a barren, frozen world, having spend months carving out ice caves and trying to survive. You finally get everything just about how you need it and one of these things (brilliantly recreated by Lino M) shows up and blows everything. Probe droids, this is why we can’t have nice things (or secret bases).
One of the things I love about this ever expanding series by builder dib b is the fact that the Millennium Falcon is slightly different in every one (no really, look at the previous builds). This one is from my favorite scene in The Force Awakens, with Rey and Fin escaping Jakku aboard the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy.
I just had a nerdgasm in my kitchen, and I’m not ashamed to admit it. I’m just sitting here drinking my tea and sacrificing a good half of my biscuits to my dumb corgis when I scrolled past this gorgeous Star Destroyer by one case. I wish I had video of my reaction, but it went sort of like this: Scroll scroll scroll, nothing nothing nothing, “hmm, how am I going to post if there’s nothing…” (sharp intake of breath). I stare a moment, “ is this real? Is this a render? (click for a closer look, click again for an even closer look). My eyebrows slowly raise as my mouth opens, I put down the biscuit I’m no longer eating. “Holy crap”. It’s kind of a scaled down reaction of 9 year old me at the movies, a sort of a tingly all over feeling of joy. It made my morning, hope it makes yours too.
I am absolutely adoring this series by did b, with the Millennium Falcon in all of it’s different environments, and I think this one is my favorite yet. Such an iconic image from the greatest movie of all time, instantly recognizable and gives me a full body squee. My one question is “you came in that thing?" You’re braver than I thought.
There’s a few prerequisites for what has become UCS (Ultimate Collector Series): It has to be big, it has to be detailed, and it has to be beautiful. This Jedi Starfighter from builder thire5 ticks all the boxes. I mean, just look at that cockpit interior, this thing is awesome. While I’m not a fan of the prequels I do like some of the ship designs, and this is one of them. You can see visual ties to what became later ship designs, like Darth Vader’s TIE, it’s actually pretty brilliant. Although, I do wonder what the heck happens to the bottom of the astromech.
I’m really digging this series of Millennium Falcon MOCs by builder DID&THEBRICKS, all micro, all from my favorite movies, all perfect. This one is from Mos Eisley Spaceport, that despite being a wretched hive of scum and villainy is one of my favorite environments in the Star Wars universe (well, not the special edition version). This is where we meet Han, Chewie and the faster hunk of junk in the galaxy.
The moment I saw this picture by builder did b I was instantly transported to a galaxy far, far away. This is one of those scenes in Empire Strikes Back that I have to watch every time. You know what I mean, you may seen a movies hundreds of times, but there’s those few scenes that you just have to watch no matter what you’re doing. Like the Ferrari out the window in Ferris Bueller (spoilers) or the kitchen scene in Gremlins, it’s just what you do. And now, I think it’s time to watch Empire on this rainy Sunday morning.
