The Shrieking Shack

The production design for the Harry Potter films has always been pretty amazing, especially starting with the third movie Prisoner of Azkaban. You’ll see plenty of unconventional structures in that universe, and this is a great example, the Shrieking Shack. I won’t go into details of the story (no spoilers here) but you don’t need them to appreciate how wonky and kattywompus this thing is architecturally, and that kattywompusness is captured perfectly in this version by builder Xenomurphy.

Cozy

This cozy little cottage by builder Peeters Kevin looks like it was lifted right out of a fairytale book. I like to imagine myself coming into a clearing from the woods after a long walk to pick up some bread and cheese and seeing this welcome site. Smoke wafting up from the chimney, the smell of grass, flowers and maybe a delicious stew cooking. It’s just so inviting you want to go inside huh?

Long Hao Temple

I’m looking at this latest creation by builder jaapxaap and my mind is as bent as that roof! According to the description it’s the most complex roof he’s ever done, and I can believe it. In fact, I can’t fathom how it’s built. Purple, gold and grey, along with a splash of other colors, make for an eye catching combination. And it’s nice to see some tilted timbers construction in a clean, non castle build.

A Tranquil Place

I have to share builder Cesbrick's sentiment on this lovely little location, I just want to be here. I'm not into fishing, or boating really for that matter, but this place draws me in. I want to see inside, I want to hear the birds chirping, I want to smell the fire burning, it just looks so appealing. Maybe perhaps if I can't live here I can just park my Airstream across the lake from it so I can admire it from a distance, if only for a little while.

White Lotus Priest

It's been a while since we've featured a good tilted timbers build here, thankfully builder jaapxaap is there to give us our fix with this wonderfully disheveled, colorful dwelling. The color palette on this is stunning and eye-grabbing, while still feeling somewhat natural. Considering the colors chosen this is not logical, but really works.

Medieval Facade

This is like a cool combination of fantasy book illustration, MOC and movie set. On a movie, you really only build what's going to be seen, and usually it's just the front so everything's thin and single sided. I don't know what's on the other side of this lovely creation by builder ranghaal, but I like to imagine it's where craft service has set up, and there's a bunch of crew members standing around eating bagels.

Castle Umbră

This is one of those builds that makes you go "wait..what?" followed very shortly after with "whoa". I think there might be some dark arts at work here, and builder Ryxe could perhaps be a sorcerer or something, because I can't fathom how this is bullt or stays together, besides some crazy sort of magic.

Watchtower Of Orodruin

Everywhere you look at this scrappy watchtower by Tim Schwalfenberg you'll see two things: A very interesting technique, and something unconventional. From the craggy brickwork at the base of the tower, to the cobbled railing at the top, and from the uneven stairs on the left to the boulder rock work on the right, it's amazing. I have to admit I think this would probably give me fits though, it looks so fragile I wouldn't want to stand anywhere near it while simultaneously needing to get a good close look at it.

Sir Wizard Mecha-Nic Stronghold

This ramshackle castle punk fortress by builder hrtx is as confusing to the eye as it is appealing. So many angles, so much detail, so much storytelling, it's lovely. I don't know what they get up to in this complex structure, but one look and you ache with curiosity. I guess that's why it's a stronghold, to keep you from finding out.

Ernagh's Exotic Edible Economic Experiment

Castle builders never cease to amaze me. Not only is the bar being continually raised for build quality and techniques, but the stories get more and more elaborate and deep. This diorama by builder aardwolf_83 is a real treat for the eyes. A highlight of course is that net-based contoured roof and striking silhouette of the house, but take a look at those trees, they're a wonder. Skavenport

Welcome to Skavenport, the town of rats and men. Beware of half the population, they carry disease, can't be trusted, reproduce indiscriminately and have fleas. The other are rats. Nice build from Jacob Nion, in the tilted timbers style.

The Floating Island Of Todaidh Beag

This is stunning work. Behold the floating island of Todaidh Beag (no idea how to pronounce that) by Cesbrick. This is a top notch combination of mad building skills, excellent color use, fantastic tilted timber construction, whimsical subject matter, stellar photography and well done photo editing. Bartholomew's Border Brewhouse

Here's a little MOC loaded with character and texture. Welcome to Bartholomew's Border Brewhouse by Aardwolf. I still haven't tried this building style yet, and may never, but I'm irresistibly drawn to it and don't even know what to call it. I saw in the comments on this MOC someone said "tilted timbers". And if that's not what it's called I'd like to propose it as a term. Who's with me?
