The Other Black Tower

Make no mistake. This is not Isengard ("They're taking the hobbits to Isengard!"), home of the White Wizard himself. This is Barad-dûr, the "Dark Tower," the Capital of the Black Realm of Mordor, Home of the Firey Eye, the Place of Doom, and the Tower of Orc Filth ("Lovely titles..."). Koen has dared to enter Mordor and present this dark and gothic creation to all of us, which is a magnificent model of the iconic tower for sure. All of the black tower is incorporated well into the rocks (a detail many leave out), and rises above the ground with its terrifying presence.

This Tantive IV Gets a V Out of V!

If you think about it, the Tantive IV - a CR90 corvette cruiser that serves the House of Organa - was the very first Star Wars spaceship people ever saw. It's only fitting that we see it recreated very well in LEGO, as seen here with a model from Kit Bricksto. Its iconic shaping, its iconic thrusters, and its iconic colors are all represented in excellent form. Nice work, Kit! The LEGO is strong with this one.

This Monastery May Wu You

Robert4168/Garmadon expects us to learn to fight in a place of peace. Recreated from season 1 of LEGO Ninjago, this monastery really captures my attention with the blending of colors. The tower in the back is one of my favorite parts of the building, and also the front doors with an ornamental gate. But wait, there's more! The inside reveals the training grounds that Kai used to first learn his ninja skills. The builder did an excellent job with the detailing, keeping things simple but also curved and textured to really capture that Asian architecture.

Han Solo Needed a Place to Play as a Kid

Adam Dodge is getting in on the Star Wars action by creating this entry for the Brothers Brick Falcon Contest. Perhaps this treehouse that Han Solo played in as a child set him on the inevitable path of one day winning the Milennium Falcon from Lando Calrissian. I find this entry to be very creative, and quite well done, considering Adam had to fit the shaping of the Falcon into a treehouse design. Can't imagine that was an easy task!

YT-Slave 1

Cecilie Fritzvold took two iconic ships from the Star Wars universe, and though the ships may oppose each other, combined them into something rather creative. Built for racing, not fighting, "the Boba" is a combo (obviously) of the Slave I and the Falcon. The unusual blending of sand green, red, and gray is a very interesting design choice. It also appears to be at a challenging scale, yet Cecilie pulled off many of the iconic details quite well.

'Ice to See This Starfighter

The 2002 theme of Ice Planet inspired Sylon-tw to craft this spaceship that I'm sure could skate right through your planet's atmosphere. Though this little ship is compact, it looks like it would be pretty fast, zooming through the sky, patrolling the arctic area (or wherever it's been assigned). The intakes for the engine positioned on each side add a lot to the model, as well as the use of the fairly new cockpit/slope element in translucent orange. If you're in a cold environment, keep an eye out for this guy!

N-1 Starfighter, Coming in for a Landing

Inthert is possibly my favorite Star Wars vehicle builder out there. He truly takes the time and looks at all possible LEGO elements to make something as accurate as LEGO allows. This new version of the common Naboo fighter seen in the Phantom Menace is excellently crafted, every curve and detail (such as the front cannons). The astromech droid head is incorporated nicely, as is those much needed extra details in the cockpit area. Even the bottom, where details are usually lacking, looks good on its own, which is no easy task! I'm sure most builders are afraid to show the underside of their starfighters, but not here.

Creations for Charity 2017 Begins!

Creations for Charity 2017 now accepting donations

On October 1st, Creations for Charity founder Nannan Zhang shared the news that they are now accepting donations of LEGO creations for the LEGO charity program! For those unfamiliar with the program, Creations for Charity accepts donations of LEGO MOC's built by builders from all around the world, and sells them online. All the money raised from the selling of these MOC's goes towards purchasing LEGO sets for children in multiple countries. This year in particular, they are planning to make sure those areas affected by the recent natural disasters in the U.S. receive some new LEGO sets! If you're at all interested in donating a MOC of your own, you can check out this page here to find out how. Can't wait to see how much the project can raise this year! Remember, it all starts with you and your donations!

SHIPtember 2017 Recap

Another SHIPtember has gone by, once again full of incredible sci-fi spaceSHIPs! The 5th annual contest produced some of the best SHIP's Flickr has yet to see. With each design being 100 studs long or more, they all are leaving an impact on SHIP builders for the future.

Aslan's Stone Table

Though I am very familiar with both the books and films, I have not seen many MOC's from the Chronicles of Narnia. This was a pleasure to see come across my feed earlier this week, thanks to its builder Carter Witz. I recognized this small landscape very quickly, knowing what had just happened in this scene. The layering of the terrain meets nicely with the crumbling stone formations which surround Aslan's Table. With little bits of olive green thrown in for some growth, I think these scene turned out perfectly. Perhaps it's just me, but I feel this scene, with no minifigures or brick-built lion, gives off a very strong message to any fan of the series.

Now This is a Snowspeeder

This is a compact snowspeeder done by Kit Bricksto, and it's not because an AT-AT stepped on it. The Rebel Alliance's snowspeeders have always been a popular vehicle for AFOL's to recreate in LEGO form to the best of their ability. However, I think this model stands out due to the size. To me, it seems very proportionate to a minifigure's size. Though these speeders do fit two rebels, it's not a very large ship like many LEGO models make it out to be. Each angle of the ship was still done in excellent ways, which is a bonus considering the size.

Dashing Through the Snow with a Snowcat

De-marco has been producing a number of wonderful minifig scaled vehicles lately, but this one is by far my favorite. If you're a city builder, you need to check out these wonderfully scaled vehicles, perfect for any city layout. I think what draws me the most to this model is that everything just fits together perfectly here. Everything is scaled very well, especially for a single minifigure. A simple construction, but an effective completed model!

Rover Wheels

We've all seen many LEGO space rovers. We've featured almost just as many here on BrickNerd. The designs of these rovers get more advanced, more sleek, and overall better-built each year with the release of new parts. Though people attempt to come up with new wheel designs, so many of them don't stand out. However, this rover by Legonardo Davidy shows us an incredible wheel design on this new rover. And guess what? It uses simple, old parts! Super cool work put into this model.

When Life Gives You Ninjago, You Make a Dragon Mech

Microscale dragons are cool, but what about massive dragon mechs that minifigures can ride?! The LEGO Ninjago Movie comes out this weekend, so of course we have to look for a couple impressive Ninjago builds, right? This model of L-l-oyd Garmadon's green dragon mech by Jared R. is full of sand green goodness. Not every dragon needs wings to show its power, it only needs a menacing head and strong tail, with a few spines thrown in for good measure. This is the first MOC version of this dragon that I have seen, and I have no doubt it will remain one of my favorites. Are you excited to get your ninja on this weekend?!

     My name is Nathaniel Stoner, and I am an very active LEGO builder.  I mostly build in the themes of castle and science-fiction, but I also dabble in other genres and create occasional random MOC's (My Own Creations). 

     When I was younger, I would get and build small LEGO sets for my birthday, but I was never really into them.  When they fell apart, I would become frustrated attempting to put them back together and would throw them in a box in my closet.  I couldn't stand them!

     Then, miraculously, I became addicted to the LEGO brick later in my teen years.  Ever since, I have continued to build up (pun intended) my collection of bricks and to expand my knowledge of techniques and building skills.  LEGO is truly more than a toy, its an art form and a way to express yourself.

     For the most part, I collect LEGO Star Wars (mainly the minifigs), which is probably my favorite LEGO theme.  I have a fairly decent collection, including some of the original 1999 sets, such as the Snowspeeder, X-Wing, and Naboo starfighter.  I also collected LEGO the Lord of the Rings when those sets first came out.  The minifigs are great, and the story remains one of my favorites ever. 

     My hope is to inspire other young (and perhaps even older) LEGO builders to unleash their inner creativity!  You can find me on my Flikr here. 

SHIPtember V - Week 4 Recap

It's SHIPtember V, the fifth annual SHIP building contest! Eat. Sleep. SHIP!

As always, the objective of this incredibly fun competition is to build a massive and original SPACESHIP!, one that has to be a minimum of 100 studs in length. With one and a half weeks of building time to go, we thought it was time to showcase a few of our favorite completed SHIP's that have joined the Armada for SHIPtember V! Even some contributors for BrickNerd have gotten in on the action, like this SHIP by El Barto. I'm currently working on my entry, and I hope to see some other contributors participate! The SHIP's featured below, built by each builder respectively, are just a few of the completed SHIP's that we have yet to see. Teth? That's Wild Space

Inthert has released the latest model for his Star Wars Ring Worlds collection, with this terrain showcasing his new miniature All Terrain Tactical Enforcer, the larger tank used by Republic forces during the time of the Clone Wars. In the animated Clone Wars film, Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano use the AT-TE's to scale a large cliff on the planet Teth. Instead of a flat world recreation, the builder decided to focus on a different scene perspective for this Teth terrain. I think the presentation is very neat, but those tanks are definitely the highlight for me.

Blade Runner 1849

I have a feeling there is soon going to be a large spike in LEGO Blade Runner activity, as seen here with this latest model from Legopard. The Blade Runner cruiser was already cool enough, yet this builder was able to put an even cooler and more unique spin on the vehicle then you would normally seen. This model is just such an awesome mixture of futuristic and steampunk combined!

Even Romans Get Ambushed Sometimes. . .

Mark Erickson built this creation a year or two back, but just now is getting around to posting it on his Flickr. I'm glad he did, 'cause his Roman MOC's are some of my favorites from him. This model he is presenting to us this week features excellent landscape, the highlight of the build for me. The terrain has subtle layering that blends together very well, and the trees top off this scene. The minifigs, featuring custom accessories, are also well posed and express the emotion of the scene very well. Hoping for some more Roman creations from you, Mark!
