Wanna Build a Snowman, Bats?!

A bit more ominous winter creations...but an interesting (and perhaps even funny) one at that. Here we see Joker himself have a bit of playful fun, crafting his very own themed snowman. Though it may look innocent on the outside, I'm sure on the inside there's quite a bit of explosives and Joker cards just waiting to be released. A very interesting build by Sad Brick.

Slick Sleigh

Of course, Santa is not complete without his elegant sleigh to carry presents to children around the world! The month of December is also never complete without several Christmas sleigh designs. This one in particular, built by BrickinNick, reminds me of the one we see in The Polar Express film. This sleigh is elegant, but also looks solid enough to hold the weight of those gifts (plus some milks and cookies, I'm sure). The only thing missing here are some reindeer. Perhaps it's dinner time for them?

Don't Touch L.O.L.A.

Anybody who closely follows the Marvel Cinematic Universe surely is familiar with Agent Philip Coulson, and his fancy car Lola. "Don't touch Lola." PsychoBrick took Coulson's flying car to a whole new level by designing this mech version of the corvette. Seriously, how cool is this model? The inclusion of the printed Lola element fits perfectly into the abdomen section, which I think is really designed well. Overall a very cool and creative model!

Build to Give!

As the holiday season is approaching, we are reminded that this is a time of giving and being with those who are important to us. LEGO itself is promoting Build to Give, a way that people around the world can help give LEGO to children. Partnering with UK based charity organization, LEGO reports that: "The team at Fairy Bricks aim to visit over 100 hospitals throughout the UK and their army of elf-like helpers will be on hand delivering the LEGO gifts to the thousands of children who will be spending this Christmas in hospitals."

How can you get involved? Well, LEGO itself is hosting several events at select locations where people can help support the cause. By creating and sharing a holiday decoration build, LEGO will donate additional LEGO sets to children in need this holiday season. (Check out LEGO's official Facebook post to see a list of events, and additional information.) If you aren't able to attend anything in person, no problem! Create something at home and share it with LEGO using the hashtag #buildtogive! It's things like this that make us honored to be a part of the LEGO community. Spread the word and help give to those in need of holiday spirit!

Ornaments to Help Decorate Your Tree

There are always great Christmas tree ornaments built each year. This batch by LEGO 7 are some of the first we've seen for this season. The designs showcased below have a very playful design to them, almost as if they were specifically designed as children's ornaments (which they absolutely could have been). That's face it, there were always "those ornaments" that we couldn't hang on the tree as kids because they were more fragile, right? Well, now it's time for you to build your own ornaments that nobody else is allowed to hang proudly on the Christmas tree! If these don't inspire you to start designing some of your own, I don't know what will!

Goblin Realm

This portion of the home of the goblins that we saw in the Hobbit trilogy looks very accurate, due to how fragile the wooden platforms appear. Grame S. took the risk of using some more tricky connection points to support the large and irregular wooden platforms built into the rock formations. Definitely take a minute to take a closer look at this impressive rockwork and (intentional) messy platforms built by these ugly creatures. I get shivers just looking at this MOC!

When Life Gives You Translucent Yellow Cockpits...

Tim Goddard unleashes this new classic space starfighter on the galaxy! Check out the engine detailing in the rear, the greebling on the wings, and the smooth integration of the cockpit into the main body of the spaceship. Every year, we see more and more crazy spaceship designs using the classic theme that LEGO did years ago. Builders like Tim are doing a fabulous job at keeping this theme alive today.

Let's Colonize This Place

David Zambito took the classic TIE fighter cockpits and put them to good use in this other worldly colonization vignette. He integrated them so well, to the point that you almost couldn't see them as anything but a glass dome on an another world. These microscale colonization style builds are a rather popular idea, and David added another great one to the mix. The terrain color choice really pops, drawing you into see this build.

This Speeder Woke the Force

Calin has taken a crack at Rey's rather loud, homemade speeder from the Force Awakens. There have been many models of this particular vehicle, and this is another great addition to the collection we can see online. I particularly like the placement of the net of junk, and the seat area. Zoom zoom!!!

A Skyline of Microscale History

A fantastic lineup of microscale, recognizable buildings from our history built by Simon NH. An incredible ancient pyramid temple, using a technique I've never seen before to execute that stacked effect that is so recognizable. Each building focuses on interesting parts usage to get some a small design to look so recognizable. Awesome job!

Elegant Medieval Parts Use

Markus Rollbuhler is currently one of my favorite builders on Flickr. There are many builders today recognized for their excellent experimentation and re-imagination with the typical combination of LEGO parts. Markus comes up with new techniques, but he stands out to me because each presentation is so elegant. Take this brand new model, for example. How many incredible uses of elements can you pick out? Personally, I love the use of hockey sticks, and the green feathers to create that incredible tree (one of the most interesting I've ever seen!).

Technique Tuesday - How Could Tree Designs Get Anymore Crazy?

One of the best things about the LEGO community is that we can learn from one another.  Here at BrickNerd, we like to share techniques that we see from builders all around the world. . .

I think Full Plate broke the barrier when it comes to microscale tree designs. This technique could totally work for a larger tree, but man would it require a lot of parts! I know that I have seen many tree designs used for microscale models, but I haven't seen anything new in ages. A strange combination of parts in green can create something very organic before your eyes. Check out this breakdown provided by the builder!

Light! There Must Be Land Nearby!

I feel like lighthouses a quite a rare site today in the real world, which isn't something I've thought too much about until I saw this lovely model by Tim Schwalfenberg. With such a dark atmosphere, the white tower really pops and draws your focus to this creation. I think the white stone design was a good choice, besides creating the contrast that begs for your attention. I think white stonework isn't done too often, and works so well for a lighthouse such as this creation. Ships don't need to worry, for this lighthouse will show you the way!

"I Can Show You the Ways of the Force!" "What?"

Carter Witz recreated the stunning new lightsaber duel we saw in the Force Awakens. Excellent rockwork, with Rey positioned just over the edge as Starkiller Base splits apart. The trees made by Carter are also well done, though a tad skinny. I continue to see just how useful minifigure arms and hands can be to a wide range of creations. I also appreciate the base of this model, just the way the rockwork meets the blade border. Very sleek!

Do You Need Waste Removed? I Know a Truck. . .

I think some creations that deserve more recognition then they receive are well-built city vehicles for minifigs, such as this garbage truck by De-marco. With some simple experimentation, and even by using basic elements, you can create excellently scaled (and detailed, too) vehicles for your city layouts! If you're a city builder, you need to check out this creative truck (it even has a working feature!).

Joe Miller shows us a technique that can turn a boring, plain floor into a floor with a pro design! This can go with any modern kitchen, or old dungeon. It's a simple combination of 2x2 tiles and putting those 1x2x1 wall elements together to create a small gap between the tiles of your flooring. Simple, but next level detail!

Nathaniel Stoner

     My name is Nathaniel Stoner, and I am an very active LEGO builder.  I mostly build in the themes of castle and science-fiction, but I also dabble in other genres and create occasional random MOC's (My Own Creations). 

     When I was younger, I would get and build small LEGO sets for my birthday, but I was never really into them.  When they fell apart, I would become frustrated attempting to put them back together and would throw them in a box in my closet.  I couldn't stand them!

     Then, miraculously, I became addicted to the LEGO brick later in my teen years.  Ever since, I have continued to build up (pun intended) my collection of bricks and to expand my knowledge of techniques and building skills.  LEGO is truly more than a toy, its an art form and a way to express yourself.

     For the most part, I collect LEGO Star Wars (mainly the minifigs), which is probably my favorite LEGO theme.  I have a fairly decent collection, including some of the original 1999 sets, such as the Snowspeeder, X-Wing, and Naboo starfighter.  I also collected LEGO the Lord of the Rings when those sets first came out.  The minifigs are great, and the story remains one of my favorites ever. 

     My hope is to inspire other young (and perhaps even older) LEGO builders to unleash their inner creativity!  You can find me on my Flikr here.

Forgotten Days made this massive diorama that packs in many details, and almost allows you to recreate a large portion of the Empire Strikes Back. Thriller!

Have you ever wondered what Michael Jackson would look as a zombie? Yeah, me neither. On the other hand, this makes LEGO 7's latest model even more unique. Those eyes are a tad scary, but what's even more scary is how Jackson's hair still looks good, even in resurrected form. The zombie hands crawling their way from the depths of the earth is the excellent finishing touch that this build needed.

Get Off-road and Unwind

Ralph Savelsberg is always in his element when it comes to building models of vehicles. This one may be one of my favorite cars he has ever done, simply because it just turned out so perfectly! It hardly appears to be LEGO, except the studs on the hood that give it away. I'd really like to see more off-road vehicles like this in the future! My only question is...does it have cup holders?

Garbage Patch

Full Plate shows us this wonderful LEGO scene with a serious message. There is so much garbage lining the bottom of the world's oceans. It's truly a sad thing to think about - the further pollution of our home. This small (but powerful) scene really captures the ocean and beach atmosphere well, but also includes some of the horrible things we can encounter beneath the surface of the waves.
