Rad Robots

I'm a kid of the 80's. You guys read about what it was like when the arcade was king, I was there. You hear Adam Ant on the Spotify, I bought the record. You mock break dancing, I did it (did I just say that out loud?) And when we thought 'robot', we thought of the likes of these MOCs by breaksbricks72 (and of course Star Wars). They're inspired by the Tomy Omnibots series, and they're totally bitchin' dude.

Bricks, Filmed: A Conversation with Director Daniel Junge

LAST year, a little film about plastic toy bricks hit theaters and immediately became a worldwide phenomenon.  Starring the voices of Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks and Will Ferrell, The LEGO Movie followed the adventures of minifigs Emmett and Wildstyle as they battled the big, bad Lord Business. After pulling in more than $250 million at the box office, TLM was a bonafide pop culture hit.

Summer Is Winding Down

It's been a full summer. I've cruised to Alaska, attended Brick Magic, saw Eddie Izzard, went camping, attended San Diego Comic Con, Went to Disneyland, saw some movies, made some movies and managed to not get sunburned (much). Now it's only a couple weeks before school starts and hotels lower their rates. But we can all enjoy this embodiment of summer in a single MOC by nobu_tary, and get out the tanning butter one more time.

It's Nerf Or Nothing

Fans of bricks and foam projectiles rejoice! Builder Proudlove has recreated my favorite all-time Nerf gun with my favorite bricks. It's so well done I almost passed it over thinking it was real. No creative cubicle environment is complete without proper dart warfare, and this pistol was always my weapon of choice, simple, effective, reliable and stylish.

Slot Cars

The finicky, snap-together track, the flags that never quite stood straight up, the cars that spun out if you hit to turn too fast and the smell, that wonderful almost burnt smell. This is a total blast from the past and a glimpse into my childhood, slot cars. We had many tracks over the years, some better than others, but all so much fun. Thank you msx_80 for the little flash back, I needed that.

Ah, Childhood (Almost)

While I consider myself a kid of the 80's, it's more from the standpoint of young adulthood. It's when I got my first movie camera, when I fell in love with movie magic and when I became, well, me. Technically I'm a kid of the 70's, Which means Stretch Armstrong, Star Wars and lawn darts. I was a little old when Transformers came along and GiJOE shrunk inexplicably. But tucked away in this room is something that became an influence in my adult life, a View-Master. Reverse engineering stereo images as a kid thanks to my handy viewer, I developed a deep understanding of 3D. Now I use that knowledge from time to time in my other career, movie nerd.

Mad Stairway Drawing Skills

BrickNerd_MOCstalgia.jpg

Here at BrickNerd we like to look back from time to time, and draw squiggles with knobs. This is childhood in a single picture, an iconic toy built from my favorite toy. Everyone remembers trying to draw the family pet or house, only to discover part way through that there was no way to get to that next detail without leaving a bizarre contrail. Then with one mis-turn of a knob and the whole thing was for not. No biggie though, one big shake and it was on to the next drawing. I don't know how old this MOC is, all I know is it was built by customBRICKS, and it's awesome.

View-Master® Master

One of my jobs before I fled hollywood was stereographer, or "the guy in charge of the 3D". If you're one of the six people who saw Hansel & Gretel in 3D and didn't get a headache, you're welcome. I've been a stereo enthusiast all my life, and I'm certain it's because of one of these devices, or at least the real thing that inspired Bruce Lowell to build this marvelous MOC. I remember staring in wonder at my Disneyland reels as a kid and marveling at the technology.
