Summer Down Under: Surfer Girls Revisited
/Yeah, yeah, I know it’s almost Christmas, and for a lot of us, it already feels like it’s been winter for a while now. But if Hallmark can do Christmas in July, why can’t we do July for Christmas? Our Southern Hemisphere readers get it!
BrickNerd contributor and long-time builder, Miro Dudas, just can’t leave well enough alone:
“I don't know how many of you go through constant refinement of certain MOCs. I often start a MOC and wish there was a part in a specific color, and I often have to either wait for me to obtain it or wait for LEGO to produce it. So I put off updating it for years at a time.”
That all makes perfect sense. LEGO evolves, your skill as a builder evolves, life happens, you disappear, then all of a sudden, you’re back! I get it.
History
Miro’s 2016 edition caught my eye for a quick BrickNerd post, back in the before times.
It was the era of Cube Dudes, so this style was a welcomed respite from all of that. Some new colors and parts were also featured here, adding to the novelty. What I enjoyed were the lifelike poses, the hairstyles, and of course, the Ukulele.
First Draft
Here we have the first edition, rough draft, whatever you want to call it. The outfit was more lingerie than swimsuit, and the board’s studs were exposed, but you get the idea of where Miro was going here. The scale and basic pose were pretty much there, as was the wave, which appeared in the 2016 build.
Vintage Hawaii Surfer Girl
Fast forward a decade, and here we have the final product! For now at least… I first noticed some updated connections. There are all sorts of new parts available that didn’t exist ten years ago. Then I saw the smooth arms and the new leg design (similar to the Tinkerbell instructions he made for BrickNerd). The wave cave is pretty nifty, too, although I think I prefer the bendy look of the old one, but that’s just me.
There you have it, for all you Christmas surfing fans! An updated version of an old MOC, taking advantage of new parts, colors, and modernized techniques. And to keep in the spirit of things, let’s end with a song!
Do you revisit old MOCs to make improvements? Did you ask Santa for a new surfboard? Let us know in the comments below!
