The Classic LEGO Theme You Should Vote For

LEGO 90th Anniversary Theme Vote.jpg

To celebrate LEGO’s 90th anniversary, the company is letting fans vote for a classic theme that will be the inspiration for a new singular set released in 2022. But which of the 30 themes on the ballot should you vote for? Our BrickNerd team weighed in and came to the conclusion that the single perfect LEGO theme to make a comeback is…

Adventurers.jpg

Gwyneth: “LEGO tiptoes around these themes in new iterations, but what never gets old is the sense of adventure in the bricks. The world has grown in the past 90 years, and old visions are ripe for reimagination. I vote for Adventurers.”

Andreas: “Awesome pieces, amazing prints, and an Indiana-Jones-middle-eastern-desert-Mosque vibe. And also... elephants! How can we not want a new take on Adventurers!?”

Space Police.jpg

Noah: “I’m going for Space Police!”

Bionicle.jpg

Grayson: “Bionicle was unique in its construction system and multimedia story, and is said to have been so popular that it saved LEGO from financial ruin. It seems that LEGO has given up on constraction, now going on three years without a single set, but many still remember and love the theme which to them defined a decade. (Plus, what was up with that image compared to the rest!?)”

Ted: “As one of the ‘old-timers’ of the BrickNerd crew, you might think I’d have some nostalgia for past themes; I do not. I am all about creating my own themes and finding ways to integrate interestingly shaped parts. That is why if I can be troubled to vote, it is Bionicle all the way.”

Forestmen.jpg

Geneva: “It's hard to choose between all these classic themes but thinking of hideouts, treasure bags, peaked hats, and bows and arrows is making me long to see another Forestmen set!”

Markus: “There is just something in the castle theme that continuously transports one back to childhood. None of its iterations were as inherently joyful though as the merry Forestmen, living in happy tree houses and parting noblemen of their riches – always beaming with a smile! If I could vote, it’d be Forestmen.”

Imperials.jpg

Doug: “Choosing one of these beloved themes is nigh impossible but if I must I'll go with Imperials. Something speaks to me about adventure on the high seas and we need Imperials to patrol the waves against the two new pirate sets! I would love to see a high-quality docks remake!”

Paradisa.jpg

Pedro: “My first system set was 6411 Sand Dollar Café from the Paradisa theme. With so much action going on in LEGO City, where every minifig runs everywhere while fighting threats, wouldn't it be refreshing to see some of them having a relaxing vacation on Paradisa? I vote for that!”

Classic Space.jpg

Bart: “Classic Space is one of the original three LEGO themes featuring minifigures, and it’s still the coolest! Bring it back, bring it all back!”

Lia: “I was hoping Fabuland would be on the list and I’m surprised to see not being considered as one of the 30 favorite classic LEGO themes. I would've picked Fabuland, then Classic Space and then Exploriens.”

Rock Raiders.jpg

Griffin: “‘A new cavern has been discovered!’ With the resurgence of teal parts, it's the perfect time for the return of Rock Raiders!”

M-Tron.jpg

Sergio: “M-Tron because it has magnets. Also, they had a rad color combination—those trans neon-green pieces provided a futuristic touch.”

Dragon Knights.jpg

Malin: “I adore Bionicle with all the cool parts, and I have had so many great moments playing with my kids after buying a box of rejected Bionicle parts from another AFOL’s collection. But I would love it if Dragon Knights came back and with more fantasy minifigs. My roleplaying heart would melt, and I'm already planning the MOCs I would build!”

Town.jpg

Are: “I grew up with the Town sets of the '80s, so those hold a special place in my heart. I'd love to see what today's LEGO designers could come up with as a tribute set using those old aesthetics! Can't help but give my vote to Town.”

Ice Planet.jpg

Pedro again: “I changed my mind. I only had one set from Ice Planet in 1993, 6814 Ice Tunnelator. We’ve had a cold relationship throughout the years... Icee an opportunity to finish what I started.”

Pirates.jpg

Tommy: “Pirates was the line that allowed me to emerge from my ‘reluctant dim age.’”

Classic Castle.jpg

Dave: “Classic Castle because that is how it all started, the current generations of fans have never experienced it, and it would honor the past to the greatest degree. Plus who wouldn't want a new old Yellow Castle?”

Francisco: “My choice is going to be predictable: Classic Castle. I love all ‘Classic’ themes (and more), but I feel we really only got one big set there (the Yellow Castle), and it also happens to be one of the most iconic ones ever. So it's finally time to get more!”

Spyrius.jpg

Pedro again again: “I changed my vote again. Last time, I promise. I lost my mind when I got the Robo-Guardian from Spyrius. It was one of the best individual sets of the era. Now, it seems really small to me, but I remember it being huge as a kid. I dreamed of it when I was 5 or 6 years old. Maybe those dreams can actually come true now with a new one.”

Castle Town Space.jpg

Michael: “What I'd really love to see is a $120-$150 set with three medium-size sub-sets including one each from Castle, Town AND Space.”

Other themes on the ballot that didn’t quite make our list include many that still exist in some form or another today. The runner-ups are Alpha Team, Aquazone, Arctic, Black Falcons, Black Knights, Blacktron, Divers, Exploriens, Lion Knights, Model Team, Studios, Time Cruisers, Trains, Wolfpack and Xtreme Team.

Well, there it is folks! Our definitive BrickNerd choice(s) for the theme LEGO should bring back for their 90th anniversary.

All kidding aside, any one of these themes (including the ones we didn’t pick) would be exciting to revisit. Perhaps LEGO should make a tribute set for each classic theme for their 100th anniversary! But until then, make sure you vote for your favorite by January 25th.
