Like builder Tim C76 I grew up watching sci-fi. After Star Wars erupted on the scene all the studios and every TV network scrambled to get in on some of that hype. As a result we were flooded with the likes of Buck Rogers, Laserblast, Battle Beyond The Stars and Battlestar Galactica. I did watch BG, mostly just to see space battles, and Daggett, I loved Daggett. This excellent interpretation of a Battlestar is inspired by both the classic series and the reboot, and in my opinion melds the best both had to offer.
I was in the mood for some Neo Classic Space goodness this morning, luckily Horcik Designs was there to hook me up. This fighter has a pretty nice balance of greebles and classic inspiration. It sorta reminds me of a Jedi Starfighter (one of the few prequel ships I actually like) with a taste of good old 497.
I know it's less than a year old, but somehow I missed this in January and discovered (or maybe rediscovered, I was working crazy hours then and don't remember much) it this morning. Regardless my jaw hit the desk when I laid eyes on this beauty. And for all you SHIPtember builders, I'd like to point out this thing is about as wide as your SHIPs are long, and studless end to end, stunning. This is gorgeous, it's like a scene from a movie. I love everything about this awesome shot by agaethon29, the build, the lighting, the composition, everything. Here's a sleek neo classic space beauty from builder and phenomenal photographer agaethon29. I've been admiring his photography for over a year, and he may not build very often, but when he does...wow! This is like the illegitimate love child of the Galaxy Explorer and the Moonbase Interceptor, and I love it.
Here's a heaping dose of interstellar awesome from BrickNerd's own El Barto. Built during the first Cylon war to provide tactical support to the Battlestar groups, the Colonial Gunstars were faster and more maneuverable than their Battlestar big brothers.
This is 63 inches of camouflaged awesome. The size is impressive, the style and design is unique, the display on the shipyard is novel and the detailing is superb. Fans of Alien, one of the best science fiction films of all time, will recognize this craft. This is the Narcissus, the shuttle craft/life boat of the Nostromo. The original was designed by Ron Cobb and built by Martin Bower and Phil Rae. This version was built by Sir Nadroj, and it's practically perfect. Despite it's simplistic shape, this model was not easy to build I'm sure, but I for one appreciate the effort, it's gorgeous.
It's party time! There's a whole lot to love about this imaginative party scene by builder Priovit70. From the excellent space station room to the humorous and detailed characters attending the party. It's clear that Priovit70 is channeling his inner Pete Reid, with blips and a turtle in attendance. But my favorite touches are the xenomorph and the Spock cameo, brilliant.
Rancorbait's awesome micro space fleet continues to grow with the addition of this stunning heavy assault cruiser. Like his Nova cruiser we blogged just last week, this one has a fantastic blend of broad strokes and greebly goodness. But this one looks ready to take on an armada by itself. I love that both vessels are unique yet share enough features like color scheme and shape combinations to make them look like they're from the same fleet, very well done.
I love a MOC that makes you look twice to determine it's scale. This medium assault cruiser by Rancorbait hits all the right proportions with larger bulky surfaces to smaller greebly bits. I think it's the careful use of a couple minifigure hands that gives it the right amount of small detail in it's silhouette, which is important for establishing scale. And the use of thinner parts like the flags for the front end and the panel creating the intake or docking bay on the side protrusions. Those help break up the chunky surfaces dictated by the thickness of standard bricks.
Hey, where are all the domes? I recall as a kid in the 70's that these were the future. We'd all be living in them by the year 2000. Then again, we're still waiting for hover boards and people still watch Gilligan's Island so...so much for progress. But we can still imagine a future where domes like this one from Miro78 dot the lunar surface, and we all rock colorful space suits.
Chunky. Yes, Chunky is the best word to describe this spaceship by builder Rancorbait. Chunky has been a trend lately it seems in spaceship design within the FOL community. And who can blame them? These types of chunky creations offer up some very cool angles with NPU all over the place. Also, in a practical sense, the extra girth offers benefits to the ship in the dangers of space. Like keeping it protected when accidentally running into asteroids, abandoned satellites, other ships, meteor showers, etc. Holy cow is space is dangerous place or what?! Or at least that is what they teach us in the movies right? I looking at you, Gravity!
This VTOL (vertical takeoff and landing) vehicle by Brixnspace is an amazing blend of Osprey, Apache and badassness. It's got just enough real-world inspiration and aesthetic to give it a believability, and enough creativity to make it captivating. The color combinations, proportions, weaponry and smooth lines all add up to a very formidable aircraft.
It seems inevitable that one day we'll have biped machines roaming either this or other worlds. We're just so captivated by the concept of making things walk. If the recent DARPA event is any indication we're still quite a ways off, but we still have our collective imagination. Like this awesome neo classic space walker by newcomer damoncorso, the future looks bright and stompy.
Let's face it, the future isn't going to invent itself. It's going to take creative minds, deep thinkers, tinkerers and dreamers to make it happen. And no matter how far in the future you go, there's always going to be new trails to blaze, new ideas to realize and and new dreams to strive for. Like these intrepid researchers in space, making the next generation of robots happen thanks to the creative mind of Legoloverman.
Now here's a mashup I can get behind, Star Wars and neo classic space. Builder Billyburg has brought together the form factor of an all time classic ship from a galaxy far, far away with the modernized aesthetic but classic color combinations of LEGO classic space and the results are pretty sweet. This thing looks ready to take on the Empire.
This looks like the cover of a classic science fiction book or magazine. This is how to shoot a ship! Note the fairly harsh side lighting, implying a single source of light, like a nearby star. This of course usually leads to much of the ship in total darkness, which leaves you the problem of being able to see it's silhouette. Here the problem is solved with a beautiful flare and planetary background. Nice ship, nice shot, nice editing, well done Tim C76
