Prepare for Launch

With the recent discussion about the latest LEGO Ideas project, let's look at a microscale space shuttle preparing for launch, built by Chris Malloy.  This little display is packed with some nice examples of NPU of basic parts, not only on the shuttle, but the support structure as well.  It appears that a new generation is off on a new adventure. . .in spaaaace!

Nathaniel Stoner

     My name is Nathaniel Stoner, and I am an very active LEGO builder.  I mostly build in the themes of castle and science-fiction, but I also dabble in other genres and create occasional random MOC's (My Own Creations). 

     When I was younger, I would get and build small LEGO sets for my birthday, but I was never really into them.  When they fell apart, I would become frustrated attempting to put them back together and would throw them in a box in my closet.  I couldn't stand them!

     Then, miraculously, I became addicted to the LEGO brick later in my teen years.  Ever since, I have continued to build up (pun intended) my collection of bricks and to expand my knowledge of techniques and building skills.  LEGO is truly more than a toy, its an art form and a way to express yourself.

     For the most part, I collect LEGO Star Wars (mainly the minifigs), which is probably my favorite LEGO theme.  I have a fairly decent collection, including some of the original 1999 sets, such as the Snowspeeder, X-Wing, and Naboo starfighter.  I also collected LEGO the Lord of the Rings when those sets first came out.  The minifigs are great, and the story remains one of my favorites ever.

LEGO In Hot Water After Unveiling Major Spoiler Set

The LEGO Group has found itself is a bit of trouble after unveiling a new set. The outcry has been severe with the announcement of LEGO 040117 The Destruction Of Jedha as an upcoming May 4th special purchase. The set depicts the aftermath of the destruction of the ancient Jedi city of Jedha, a tragic moment in the film Rogue One. "I can't believe they would reveal such a major plot point like that" said Star Wars super fan Iain Heath. "This is an outrage, think of the children!". The LEGO Company has released the following statement:

The LEGO Company has had a long and prosperous partnership with Lucasfilm and the Star Wars franchise. We understand how this set could be misconstrued as a "spoiler" but it's been four months since the movie came out, where have you been?

The set is one of the largest ever with 7332 pieces and is going to be available in stores only on May 4th 2017 as part of LEGO's yearly "May the Fourth" celebration.

BB-8 Gets Upgrades (Or Costumes)

Who knew that BB units could be customized to such great lengths?  I wonder which option Rey will go with first. . .  Builder Pangeran Panda has designed a grand total of 12 different modifications for one of our new favorite droids.  It also appears we have been given the crossovers between Star Wars, DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Pokemon, and Hello Kitty that some fans may or may not have wanted.  Which model is your favorite?

Cookie Monster Got His Hair Dyed

Yet another incredibly creative build from this month's Iron Builder competition.  Legopard, one of two competitors, has brought your childhood monster-under-your-bed concept to life.  To me, though, I see a green version of Cookie Monster (not exactly sure why, I think it's the eyebrows and eyes).  I guess you could say he was looking for cookie crumbs underneath this child's bed.  Instead, it appears he found LEGO bricks and a top.  A wonderful concept that was arranged perfectly!  I'd love to hear how exactly the builder came up with this idea. . .

What Is Going On In My Head

For the first time ever the secret has been revealed as to the anatomical makeup of the typical Adult Fan Of LEGO (AFOL) thanks to builder Nikita Nikolsky. Thanks to modern science and creative building we can see the inner workings of the typical brick brained AFOL. Don't be alarmed, we're all perfectly fine (well, most of us) and you have nothing to worry about. Unless you consider storage space, budget, every flat surface of your living area and of course the continual cliche threat of stepping on a brick.

The London Bus Goes Round And Round

Six years ago I lived in London. It may have been for not quite a year, but I lived there. I rode double decker buses, I ate fish and chips, I paid council tax and I avoided the dreaded TV detector vans (look it up). After my time there this MOC by wycbrandon resonates with me. While life was hard there, it was an amazing experience, and seeing landmarks I used to pass on my daily commute to Soho like Big Ben and the London Eye makes this an especially poignant art piece.

Sliders

Cheeseburgers are the perfect food. Think about it, you have the whole food pyramid in one little, delicious package (assuming you get some veg on there, pickles are delicious). Builder Gilcélio must be a fan too, judging by these scrumptious looking mini burgers. Not only do the look yummy, they're a pretty cool little assembly of nifty part uses, like the capes and the green army men bases for pickles.

Enter a New Batmobile

Though February has come and gone, Batman builds are continuing to pop up (as to be expected).  The (debatable good / bad) film Batman V Superman introduced yet another variant of the Caped Crusader's famous vehicle, almost a mix of the Dark Knight Trilogy's Tumbler and the previous, sporty designs.  PsychoBrick46 has combined set and MOC to create an awesome, play-friendly model of the Batlfeck's Batmobile.  This vehicle was a highlight of the film, for sure.  Using the official LEGO set's cockpit design to make it movie accurate, the builder created a sleek yet tough appearance for his model.  Not a vehicle I would want to mess with, for sure!

Technique Tuesday - Damaged Wall

One of the best things about the LEGO community is that we can learn from one another.  Here at BrickNerd, we like to share techniques that we see from builders all around the world. . .

This week we're featuring another wall technique demonstrated by Mala43b.  Using 1x2 jumpers (tiles with studs in center) and normal 1x2 tiles, the builder gives an example of a heavily damaged structure.  A technique like this would fit perfectly in a city battle, perhaps with military tanks advancing on the town.  It's great to continue to see more wall techniques that have nice texture, but use common elements to great effect.  Build on, everyone!

Thunderbirds fans should recognize this beauty, it's Lady Penelope's Fab 1. And it's Lady Penelope herself, driven by her butler Parker. This six-wheeled, bullet-proof modified Rolls Royce in stunning pink not only gets you there in style, but packs a punch with forward and rear machine guns, oil slick and smoke screen. Although some of those features might not be included in this brilliant MOC by redfern1950s.

A Tale Of Two Droopys

He's a Tex Avery classic, Droopy. Everyone's favorite slow talking, perpetually downtrodden dog. In a little bit of friendly rivalry builders J.B.F and 74louloute have both taken a crack at him, and the results are brilliant. While I prefer J.B.F's Droopy, the addition of the Big Bad Wolf and Red Hot Riding Hood certainly make 74louloute's pretty awesome too.

Arthur Weasley & Floo Powder

The Ministry of Magic seemed very dark and gloomy in the Harry potter films.  When reading the novels, I always pictured it as a bright and colorful place to work.  For his Iron Builder round, Eero Okkonen has brought some much needed color to the Ministry.  How abut that Arthur Weasley figure, though?  The use of colors on him is just as creative as the fireplace.  Arthur here also features a technique for spectacles that I have not seen before, using handcuffs around the eyes (is that kind of ironic?).  Fifty points to Gryffindor!

Gryphondor!

Djokson's new "Black Gryphon" model is beastly.  The wings work incredibly well, and are my favorite parts of this build.  It's very interesting how the builder used many teeth elements and angled them to curve to bodily features, yet not leaving major gaps in the model (like the beak).  Here is a creature that many Griffindor students would be proud to wear on their Hogwarts robes!

We Have the Time for a Classic

A wonderful new model by A Plastic Infinity, with a very intriguing background effect.  H.G. Wells' Time Machine is an instantly recognizable device to many people in the world, and I believe it's safe to say it was replicated perfectly here. The red upholstery mixed with the brass elements and the colors of the dish work so well together.   I have a feeling this creation will be remembered in the coming future, not only because it could travel there.

Big Headed Troopers

There is one way to beat these guys.  "We will catch them off balance. . .Do what must be done, Lord Vader."  Jokes aside, Takamichi Irie built these comical characters using the helmet elements from the LEGO buildable character sets.  What isn't funny is how well these actually work together, incorporating other simple pieces to get accurate colors and appearances.  Very nicely done!

Peterbilt 379

Builder Bricksonwheels is back with another incredibly detailed rig. This time it's a Peterbilt 379 hauling a Polar Tanktrailer, and it's stunning. The attention to detail and care that went into this is staggering, and thanks to a full compliment of lighting products by Brickstuff, it looks a treat even in the dark.
