He Ain't Heavy.. He's the Mark/5...

Nick Trotta brings us the Heavy Light Mk/5. Mark tells us this began with major inspiration from a sketch by the talented J. C. Park. As the build continued Nick put in his own refinements with help from a number of building buddies. The colour scheme is great with the wonderful yellow accents really popping. One of my favourite aspects of the build is the way this looks like a real world craft rather than a sci fi build. The complex angles are seemlessly integrated and the snot work all over is very easy on the eye.

Boss Fight

I must confess I haven't actually played a castlevania title since the late 80's but when I saw this build I knew that a) Jerac is back! b) I want to dust off my emulator and hit the retro trail!

I don't know the creatures name but he comes from the game Aria of Sorrow.  As usual this Boss starts off as your average Joe,  a fireballing guy in a suit but after a good whipping and a healthy stomp or two he morphs into this flying behemoth.

There is so much to enjoy about this MOC, the body shaping, flowing hair and bone work topped off with those vibrant red entrails and a bang tidy edit to boot! Welcome back Jerac I for one have missed you!

Braewood Castle

JAAPXAPP has finished his first largish scale Castle MOC and I love it! The roof work is a particular highlight. For me The walls hit exactly the right balance between detail and not being too busy! I really like the area around the door frame, and those the arches are perfect. The gentle curves on the roof give it that authentic fairy tale feel. It might be a bit controversial but I am not the biggest fan of the ultra piece intensive, higgledy-piggedly castles which seem to be in vogue right now, I do appreciate the aesthetics on those but this looks like a proper castle that has been built to last!

The colours and textures of this build are an instant winner for me and as always with my favourite builds there are a nice selection of minifigs with excellent posing adding a nice touch of flavour.

 

 

Geek Chic - Fabulous Furniture

LeTranger Absurde brings us this delightful set of office furniture! The scale is quite deceptive, I'm not normally one to get excited about furniture (my wife loves cushions and mirrors) but this really tickled my fancy.  I love those micro star wars vehicles on the desk ahd the inclusion of minifigs as dolls is a delight. I also really admire the details of the wood panels that fabulous lampshade. Why not swing by and take a look LeTranger's photostream it's abound with delights!

Gobble Gobble... Blam Blam Blam!

timofey_tkachev is full of surprises. He recently wowed us with his ORCA. So I opened up Flickr and saw this turkey MOC. Decent build I thought, love the use of the balloon pieces for the wings! and the presentation with the plate and real glasses is bang tidy.

It turns out this is actually a transformer! Timothy spares us any wacky back story or explanation. I like to think this is a highly sophisticated 21st century assassin robot sent by ultra radical vegans intent on eradicating meat eaters....This could just as easily have come from the latest episode of Rick and Morty, I just don't know - maybe one of you guys can fill me in? Either way I love both aspects of the build. Head over to his stream and take a look! I just dig that minifig turkey as the face and top half of the turkeybots head!

He Said Welcome To The Frickin' Guardians Of The Republic

BrickinNick celebrates both May the 4th AND the release of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2. Here we have a brick-built Grewbacca and Rocket Solo. It's a crossover that does not look strange in the slightest, actually. I think it works well, especially Grewbacca. I'm not sure why, but I also really like how the iconic weapons are designed. This is most certainly a crossover I'd watch in an instant.

How many of you have (non-LEGO) models of Han Solo's famous Corellian freighter? JK Brickworks created a monochrome model out of LEGO. It's bringing two awesome model styles into one! Though there may not be color, this ship is still instantly recognizable, including all its details and angles. Nicely crafted!

The Battle of Helms Deep is Not Over Yet

We're all quite familiar with Helms Deep. We've seen tiny versions, we've seen medium size versions. However, rarely do we see a model this large. Classical Bricks is prepared to recreate quite a battle, the question is...does he have enough Uruk-hai? I would recommend having multiple Elves ready to protect that weakness in the fortress...

A Battle Fit for a King

A collaborative castle battle effort that was on display during BrickFair Virginia 2016. Gary^The^Procrastinator shared photos of this magnificent battle on his Flickr photostream. Multiple skilled castle builders contributed to this massive MOC, creating realistic ruins and an awesome port battle. Some of those boats are truly inspiring. Itsy Bitsy Steamy

Steampunk is always intriguing, as are mechanical insects. When the two mix, you get something beautiful and inspiring. Jonas Kramm made a delicate looking steampunk mechanical insect. What more could you ask for? That clear dome on the very bottom, covering (yet revealing) some inner mechanisms of the spider is easily my favorite aspect of this build. Wonderful work!

Hall of Horses

Edoras, the capital of Rohan. A lovely microscale rendition of this beautiful, golden city in Tolkien's magical world. Isaac S. created this little city for the LEGO Middle Earth Olympics over on MOCpages. Incorporating very simple pieces, there's no way this build could look anymore similar to the actual city. Well done!

Ziiiiiip!

Zipper up, it's getting cold outside!  Both Takamichi irie and Dead Frog Inc. have individually created interesting zipper designs in the past month.  Both designs are very different from each other, and it should be noted that Dead Frog's (the second zipper) was involved in a competition, while Takamichi had a choice in the parts he used.  Dead Frog was participating in InnovaLUG's ABS Builder Challenge, which involves using a specific element in creative ways.  For his creation, Dead Frog was limited to the light blue element that you see making up the zipper.  Both look fairly watertight, so they should be prepared!

First Position Goes To...

David Hughes - I just don't know how he does it! He has brought Tanaquil Le Clercq to life in this model of the dancer from 'Afternoon of a Faun'. The build consists of around 3,000 LEGO bricks and is Hughes' "most complicated build to date", requiring a lot of scaffolding whilst in progress. Despite the fact the bricks used here are straight-edged, the dancers' curves are streamline and soft. Their strength, passion and fluidity are all captured perfectly.

There seems to be a sudden wave of many amazing micro and nano scale creations in the past few months.  This miniature (yet mighty) space rover is a wonderful addition!  Builder Sad Brick has created a rover that is so unique, but incredibly realistic at the same time.  I would definitely cruise around in a full size version of this adorable little build!

This Build is Not a Nightmare!

Builder Cesbrick has created a very fun Halloween build this season - a scene from The Nightmare Before Christmas!  The builder has used many intriguing techniques to give this creation great texture and detailing.  Every aspect of this creation is executed so well, with the slight curvature in the road, to that outstanding cobblestone!  I recognized the piece he used to do that stonework right away - Thor's hammer!  How crazy cool is that?  I do believe this technique is worthy.  All together, the colors in this build fit perfectly with the atmosphere throughout the movie.  A happy Halloween to you, Cesbrick!

Bugging Out

There are few more scary things than Giant Space Bugs. Starship Troopers is one of my favourite Sci-Fi action films. And its the Bugs that make it the more terrifying! This superb MOC by Sanellukovic shows two large bugs stomping around the ruins of some civilisation. It seems to have been built for a competition on a German LUG but I would love to see it expanded into a full Post Apocalyptic landscape crawling with Giant Space Bugs. A shiver actually went down my spine!

Here is something a little different that I missed back in July (does this count as MOCstalgia?) I am not and never will be a fan of the Friends Mini Dolls. They just doing sit well with me. However in this MOC from Tyler Sky they seem perfectly at home. I love bold colours on space ships and cool design features. And just look at the backdrop. I wish I could hop into that Jumper and blast off somewhere for food on a blanket!

MOCStalgia - Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of "Hook"!

Here at BrickNerd we like to reminisce about the past. This month Hook celebrates its 25th Anniversary and easily can be described as one of the best movies to ever bless our eyes. If you don't know what I'm talking about then you either live under a pile of LEGO or have never owned a VHS. In recognition of this occasion we have dug into the Nerdly Vault and dusted off some good ones for you to feast your gaze upon:

Starting off with this micro by Rod Gillies of Neverland. Years later and still some very fun details like the itty bitty ship and waterfall. This creation is a great example of when a builder starts an idea and then puts it down several times before completing it. Rod describes this build as having started with the ship but it wasn't until months later that it all came together.

Next up is a vignette by Angela Chung! Angela created full scenes for all characters from the Disney Collector Minifigure Series, which you can see here and here. Her Peter Pan and Hook scene has such fun details like the monkey in the crow's nest and Tick-Tock the Crocodile just below.

Keith Reed built an amazing Never Never Land Amusement Park full of Peter Pan goodness. So many details packed tight but my favorite of course has to be the ship! (Whats with me and ships today?) I'm not much of a rollercoaster enthusiast, unless you count my days of Roller Coaster Tycoon, so this park does it just right for me.

And now the man of the hour, the Captain himself. Builder Markus Rollbühler creates Hook in such a compromising position, which is such a fantastic representation of the character himself. Favorite details are the piece choices Markus makes for the collar, his belt buckle, moustache and of course those lace frills on the wrists.

In my search for the ultimate Hook related creations I came across another fun build, although not specifically Peter Pan related its still lays within our theme. This one we really had to dig for, behind the cobwebs of the interwebs (haha, get it?) builder Barney Main created this Neverland Island with so many awesome details that I personally wouldn't mind being stranded on it. Barney uses white horns and yellow hands to create some of the detail around the water and sand. Cute little creatures like the crabs and seagull and (oh my goodness) the little ship! #shipcrazy

Well if this didn't make you want to watch Hook right now then we can't be friends. I'll just go watch it alone with my LEGO and remind myself THAT I NEVER WANT TO GROW UP! 

Don't Tap the Glass, They Hate it When You Do That

Talk about a crazy (in a good way) build to see this afternoon!  Djorde has built one of my favorite funky builds that I've seen in quite some time.  I'm sure there are many fish-related jokes that one could make about this creation, especially with the recent release of Finding Dory, but I'm not going to dive too deep to think of some.  (Get it?)  Just keep swimming, Djorde!  Okay, I'll stop now.

Gryffindor Wins!

Wookiewarrior has created the most accurate (in shape, color, and size) golden Snitch I have ever seen in LEGO!  This is truly a masterpiece worthy of display, from a wizard of a builder.  I can't speak for the interior structure of this build, but I think it would be super cool if you could actually throw it around with friends.  I should also mention the awesome use of the wings from the recent Ant-Man Final Battle set, which are very realistic to the actual Snitch.  A very cool, unique, and magical build!
