The Sun Dragon

I wish dragons were real. Wait a minute, what am I saying? Even if they were real humans would have wiped them out by now (this is why we can’t have nice things!) I’ll have to be content to see them in movies, games and especially in bricks, like this marvelous example by builder dviddy. This is the sun dragon, who is very old, very wise, and smarter than all you dumb humans.

Aurora

Confession time, I’ve never seen Sleeping Beauty. Yes, as big a Disney nerd as I am, I’ve never seen it, at least in it’s entirety. I know the whole story, mostly I think, but I’ve never watched it. Despite that I have a genuine appreciation for this lovely interpretation of it’s title character Aurora (aka Briar Rose) by builder retinence. By the way, why doesn’t Aurora have a last name?

Monsters Inc. We Scare, Because We Care.

Who says monsters have to be scary. Have you ever seen an angler fish? Those are scary, and they’re just fish. I prefer my monsters to be blue collar regular joes just doing their part. Meet James P. "Sulley" Sullivan and Mike Wazowski, the top scare team at Monsters Inc by builder Palixa And The Bricks. Oh, and that short one is Boo, she’s not exactly supposed to be here.

Rock The Casbah

I went to high school in the 80’s. So things like the rise of MTV, Micheal Jackson, Madonna and Duran Duran are irretrievably interwoven with those most formative years, and I consider myself lucky. I was never much into pop music, but bands like Madness, Kraftwerk, Beastie Boys and Devo were on constant rotation in my Walkman. Another band was The Clash, brilliantly created here with their breakout hit Rock The Casbah by builder redfern1950s2. Their counterculture and social commentary lyrics resonated with my generation, and I still listen to them today.

Slimefoot

I’ve never played Magic the Gathering, but it was real popular at my house for a couple weeks a few years ago. I can’t say I recognize this character either, but that doesn’t diminish my appreciation for him (her? it?). Builder Pate-keetongu has crafted a strange but wonderful character here, with the skill and creativity we’ve come to expect.

Santa's Rigorous Quality Control

I’m guessing most kids out there who find some winter sporting goods under the tree Christmas morning don’t realize that it’s already seen some action. You see Santa takes quality control very seriously, and tests every piece of equipment personally, as seen in this awesome MOC by LEGO 7. Now there’s some at the workshop who think it’s just a lame excuse to go play in the snow, and they are on the naughty list for even thinking it.

Catch A Ride On Santa

Builder bricks.life.idea has turned the concept of a kiddie ride a bit on it’s head (or it’s bowl-full-of-jelly belly?) Here we see a reindeer enjoying a ride on Santa, while the elves try to keep it all under control. What you don’t see here is the other eight reindeer (assuming Rudolph is going to get in on this action) waiting in line for their turn.

Niffler

You better hind your valuables, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald opens this weekend and Niffler loves a bit of shiny shiny. This little platypus-like magical creature has an absolute weakness for treasure, and is cute enough to get away with it. And this brick version by builder Cha Mi captures that cuteness perfectly.

Get Distracted

Keeping up with the memes of the internet is exhausting, every time I turn around there’s a new one, and half the time I don’t get it (get off my lawn!). But builder Ochre Jelly not only keeps up, he expands on them and has pretty much woven himself into the memesphere (is that a thing? I just made it up). Take for instance the meme of the year “distracted boyfriend”, now we have a LEGO version thanks to Iain (which, by the way, is brilliant), now go forth and meme away, or go meme yourself, or memeify (I’m terrible at this).

Headmaster

Professor Dumbledore is one of my favorite characters from the books and movies of Harry Potter (but I will say, I preferred Richard Harris’ portrayal over Gambon’s). He was a total badass and knew it, but didn’t let it go to his head or flaunt it. There was a reason you-know-who was afraid of him. Builder Pate-keetongu has crafted a fitting version of the powerful wizard, and his venerable phoenix Fawkes.

The Most Feared Bounty Hunter In The Galaxy

Science has not been able to adequately describe or justify the popularity of Boba Fett. When The Empire Strikes Back came out in 1980 he was already a legend, having been the subject of much anticipation as an mail-in action figure. Then he was in the movie for a grand total of less than seven minutes and spoke 27 words…And we didn’t care at all, he was AWESOME. Speaking of awesome, check out this bust by bruceywan, he did the bounty hunter justice.

Get Well Soon!

There’s a million reasons builders take a break. And I get it, sometimes you don’t have time, life gets in the way, you’re just a little burned out, or whatever. And when I don’t see much from a prolific builder I assume they have their reasons. But having a stroke is quite possibly one of the worst reasons, as is the case of one of my favorite builders redfern1950s2. I’m very happy to report that Red is doing ok, and making a speedy recovery, and even built this charming little MOC as a gift to the caregivers at the ward. Wishing you a speedy recovery Red!
