The Winner of Cube Your Enthusiasm Is…

Cube Your Enthusiasm Reminder - BrickNerd - Header 2.jpg

A little more than a month ago, we asked you to build something using a Dots cube—anything goes—and we got 36 entries! (Woohoo! A square number!) You all built, stacked, cut and burned your way into cube infamy!

Judging this contest was very difficult because of how varied the submissions were and how much creativity these difficult seed parts inspired. Each BrickNerd contributor had an equal vote. Ultimately we concentrated on a few key criteria:

  1. Does the submission highlight the cube more than anything else? Does it use the unique features of the Dots cube like the protruding edges, hollow interior, flexibility, or the embedded hole in any way? Could any other piece have been used in place of the cube?

  2. Does the entry show “out-of-the-box” thinking and creativity?

  3. Extra credit: Is the orange loop used creatively in any way?

Honorable Mentions

These are just a few of the stand-out entries that we enjoyed. From nerdy games to bobbleheads that actually work, all of these stood out as saying, “A cube!? I got this.” Using two cubes to make a sheep (our prizes!) was just showing off!

Third Place: Caleb Inman - Playroom

Our third-place prize goes to Caleb Inman for his “Playroom” featuring some truly incredible uses of the Dots cube as the focal point of a kid’s toy room. The cube insert as a table is inspired, he used the tiles from the Dots sets for detail, and we especially love the orange loop used as a basketball hoop. (Caleb submitted several builds, including this performance art of making a Dots cube s’more!) Enjoy your five sheep, a BrickNerd swag box, and a well-earned Golden Nerdly trophy!

Second Place: Megan Rose - Aunt Ida

Our second-place prize goes to Megan Rose for her “Aunt Ida” portrait that features some stunning specs and a spectacular jawline. We can’t even imagine this build without the cubes or loops—it feels so effortless. The color, NPU of the raft for a chin, and salt and pepper hair made Aunt Ida stare into our souls. Your 10 sheep, BrickNerd box, and a Golden Nerdly are on the way!

First Place: filbrick - Buffalo and Lasso

Our first-place prize goes to filbrick for their stunning cowboy and buffalo round-up scene. The angles of the charging buffalo and poses that make this action scene feel like a still from a Wild West movie took this over the top for us. The kicked-up dust and looped lasso are inspired. Congratulations on winning our Cube Your Enthusiasm contest, 15 sheep, a BrickNerd swag box, and the coveted Golden Nerdly trophy!

Congratulations to all of the winners! We will be in contact about your prizes soon.

Contributor Contest

But wait, there’s more! In addition to the public contest, our own BrickNerd contributors wanted to join in the cubism fun. Here are their entries, all competing for a Golden Nerdly trophy (as chosen our wonderful Patrons). We have some amazing dice, a jack-in-the-box that uses the geometry of the cubes very intuitively and even a robot or two!

Congratulations to Andreas Lenander for his “Cubist Art Museum.” The edges of the cube do look like picture frames! (Though we shudder to think what the back of this MOC looks like!) This museum looks like it could go right along with Scott Wilhelm’s “Nerdly Art Gallery” from our Nerdly Strike Back contest earlier this year. Your Golden Nerdly trophy is in the mail!
