I will apologize ahead of time to those of you that have never heard of Filthy Frank and will now go on YouTube out of curiosity. I will also state for the record I do not get the appeal. I am perpetually flummoxed as to what resonates with viewers of YouTube, I've given up trying. I also don't understand Iain Heath, and no one ever will. Doesn't mean I don't love him though.

There were many cartoons playing in my house not so long ago. Luckily both my boys were young during a bit of a resurgence in cartoon production. The likes of Spongebob, RugRats, Ed Edd & Eddy and many more were new shows. One of my favorites to watch with them was Dexter's Laboratory. It had great writing, funny scenarios and excellent animation. This MOC of the title character by builder GolPlaysWithLego was a nice little dose of nostalgia this morning.

A New Year, A New Hope

Fun fact, it wasn't until late high school that I first saw Star Wars and then it was on a very loud charter bus on one of those old-school tiny overhead CRT screens. Despite the terrible viewing environment I was drawn into the Star Wars universe and have been a fan since. One of the first scenes that drew me in and got me hooked was the one where Leia despite all the chaos around her is uploading the secret Death Star Plans to R2-D2. To this day I cannot explain why I love this scene so much, but I would like to thank builder Miro Dudas for taking me back down memory lane.

Tracing Through the Snow. . .

Tracer is one of the iconic characters to be created in the 2016 game Overwatch (and is one of the few I am somewhat familiar with).  I am a sucker for good character builds, which is exactly what Nick Brick has done today!  The colors used on this character are very cool and pleasing to the eyes.  Good color schemes can really draw you into a build.  As weird as it may be, I think the pants are my favorite part, which were executed well without making them too boxy, and they lead into Tracer's hips without a large gap.  Another impressive part of this build is that it's viewable from all sides, which is not something you see with every character build.  Nice job, Nick!  Looking forward to more of these builds from you.

Nathaniel Stoner

     My name is Nathaniel Stoner, and I am an very active LEGO builder.  I mostly build in the themes of castle and science-fiction, but I also dabble in other genres and create occasional random MOC's (My Own Creations). 

     When I was younger, I would get and build small LEGO sets for my birthday, but I was never really into them.  When they fell apart, I would become frustrated attempting to put them back together and would throw them in a box in my closet.  I couldn't stand them!

     Then, miraculously, I became addicted to the LEGO brick later in my teen years.  Ever since, I have continued to build up (pun intended) my collection of bricks and to expand my knowledge of techniques and building skills.  LEGO is truly more than a toy, its an art form and a way to express yourself.

     For the most part, I collect LEGO Star Wars (mainly the minifigs), which is probably my favorite LEGO theme.  I have a fairly decent collection, including some of the original 1999 sets, such as the Snowspeeder, X-Wing, and Naboo starfighter.  I also collected LEGO the Lord of the Rings when those sets first came out.  The minifigs are great, and the story remains one of my favorites ever. 

     My hope is to inspire other young (and perhaps even older) LEGO builders to unleash their inner creativity!  You can find me on my Flikr here. 

Aliens Live in Style

If this is what our architecture will look like in the future, I'm totally okay with that.  Sleek and round structures appear to be our future when it comes to buildings.  Sad Brick has created his representation of a "Space Cathedral."  It's not directly referenced if this is a human structure, or something built by other beings in the universe.  The beauty about this creation is that it can be left up to interpretation.  The builder of this creation also included some landscape, using a very interesting technique to create some well-trimmed pine trees.  It seems to be a peaceful place to come visit!

Is This SPACESHIP Mocking Me?

The RPS Mockingbird, christened by its builder Legonardo Davidy, is packed of little, interesting techniques.  Speaking of being full, the pilot looks like he might be a little cramped inside of there!  As more angled parts are released by LEGO, it's becoming easier to create sleek SPACESHIPS! such as this design, and it also creates more opportunities.  The proportions of this ship appear to be balanced well and still appear sleek (two difficult feats when building small ships).  Compact SPACESHIPS! are my favorites, mostly because I would want to be able to zoom around.

Sometimes being separated from your brick collection can be a hardship, sometimes it can be a source of alternate inspiration. Builder Nuju Metru built this over the holidays while away from his usual bricks, and the results are stunning. It's also a departure from his usual building style, which I think is fantastic. Never let a lack of resources limit your creativity.

Robert Lundmark has been producing many fantastic Star Wars replicas in LEGO form.  Something worthy of noting is that many of these creations are not built in minifigure scale, but are rather quite larger.  Robert's latest work of art is a recreation of Jabba on his...throne inside of his feared palace on Tatooine.  This Jabba figure is really my kind of scum, fearless and inventive.  I mean that as a complement to the build, but also as a direct quote from Episode VI.  No old Jedi mind trick is needed to see that this is a very cool MOC!

What do behemoth monsters and strange invaders from other worlds have against Tokyo? Take this trip-pod walker from builder Tokyo Tag Team for instance, what the heck did that building do to deserve that? I visited Tokyo once, it's an amazing place filled with wonderful people and interesting sights everywhere. I can assure you the urge to destroy it didn't occur to me once the entire time I was there.

Axe Tree Tutorial

Trees are hard to build. They're fragile, finicky and difficult to make convincing, or at least interesting. Even more rare than a good tree is the instructions on how to build it. Well builder Full Plate is providing just that, a tutorial on how to build this tree which uses a novel methodology of axes and droid arms. Head on over to this tutorial hosted by our pals at Eurobricks. How ironic, a tree built from the very thing designed to chop them down.

Jungle Temple

I've never actually seen a pyramid, and to tell the truth I've never actually felt the need to. It's not that I don't appreciate ancient engineering, or have anything against the cultures that created them, it's because I'm from the central coast of California. This means I don't do hot, I don't do cold, and I don't do humidity. And it seems that everywhere pyramids are, that's what's around them. Just look at this marvelous jungle pyramid by builder MassEditor. You can practically hear the bugs, feel the sweat dripping down your back and smell the damp jungle air. I think I'll stick to The Jungle Cruise at Disneyland as a suitable substitute (then grab a Dole Whip, because it gets hot in Anaheim too).

While I haven't seen the movie yet, or had even heard of it until this morning, the animated feature Your Name just might be on my watch list. Before posting I thought I'd do a little research on it, and it sounds fascinating. This MOC by MikeVd recreates the movie poster to great effect, right down to the poses and tone, and the ominous comet in the background.

Zipper up, it's getting cold outside!  Both Takamichi irie and Dead Frog Inc. have individually created interesting zipper designs in the past month.  Both designs are very different from each other, and it should be noted that Dead Frog's (the second zipper) was involved in a competition, while Takamichi had a choice in the parts he used.  Dead Frog was participating in InnovaLUG's ABS Builder Challenge, which involves using a specific element in creative ways.  For his creation, Dead Frog was limited to the light blue element that you see making up the zipper.  Both look fairly watertight, so they should be prepared!

Yes, 2016 is finally about over. It's been a year of ups and downs, struggles and loss, but we keep on keeping on. It was a pretty good year for BrickNerd, with growth in readership, great cons and some good times in the name of LEGO devotion. As we ring in the new year, the year of the Rooster as illustrated by nobu_tary, we look forward to some more good times and brick mischief. Thanks for taking this ride with us.

For those who don't already know, that's Klingon for "Success!"  And that's what my pal Kevin J. Walter must have exclaimed when he finally finished this awesome Bird of Prey.  It's his all-time favorite spaceship, and the project took him six years to complete.  The goal was to have it finished by the end of the year for the Star Trek 50th Anniversary.  Just in the nick of time, Kevin, you old Targ!
