The Coral Hotel

I don’t know where my fascination with art deco came from. There’s a pretty limited sample of the style here in my home town, but I’ve always been drawn to it. So I find this latest build from snaillad totally irresistible. I would love to stay at this hotel, as long as it wasn’t pretentious and weird inside. I’ve stayed at a number of hotels in recent years that celebrate the art deco aesthetic, but only on the outside. On the inside it’s chrome bears, terrible art, pointless doors and friggin’ bean bag furniture. But as you can see, it’s classic 30’s inside this lovely building.

SL20 Streamliner

Of course the first thing I thought when I saw this stunning vehicle by builder Vince_Toulouse was "cool, art deco Batmobile!" But as we all know Batman only builds in black...and sometimes very dark gray. This slick beauty features a bubble canopy, chrome exhaust, quad headlights and Duplo tires (yes, Duplo tires).

Fill 'Er Up

And by "'Er" I mean my gas tank, shopping bag and belly, which you could do back in the day at your local service station. This throwback to the good old days by Norton74 features just such a station, and it's as charming as it was back then at the station that inspired it in Tucson Arizona. It features a detailed shop, store and diner, which are all superbly detailed and absolutely inviting.

F70 Double Falcon

Check out this beauty by Vince Toulouse!  He continues his dieselpunk theme with this fetching flying-wing design, with a dash of P-38 thrown in to spice it up.  Having the engines integrated into the wings are a clever way to reduce the drag coefficient.  Although I'm not sure how the landing gear factors into that equation, I'm sure it evens out, one way or another.  Either way, I bet when Vince is swooshing this baby around his place, he just knows it's awesome!

Brickhills Ave

Here's a little dose of some retro goodness from builder Snarled. Inspired by the art deco buildings in Los Angeles, he created a fictional but fun city corner shop. Although likely designed in the 30's and 40's, Snaillad set this in the 60's, mostly to take advantage of those groovy hair pieces from Scooby Doo and the like.

They just don't build them like this any more, and it's a shame. Art Deco is just so appealing and irresistible, how could you not want to stop here for a patty melt or malt? This just isn't a slick exterior though, check out that awesome interior. Now I'm hungry, do you suppose they serve chicken fried steak? 

Arkham Zephyr

I've never been much into trains, but I'm a sucker for streamlining and retro-future, and this thing is gorgeous. As far as I can tell it's an original design, which makes it all the more appealing and impressive. I especially love the front end, that combination of shapes is just stunning.

Art Deco Living

I loves me a little retro, and this is just my speed. I'm becoming convinced that Sir Nadroj is a time traveller. From his taste for vintage clothing to his uncanny knowledge, I think he's been sent here from the past (or is it the future?) to enlighten us with splendid design in our history. Once upon a time we were craftsmen and skilled artisans, what happened?

Monde Cinema

I'm a sucker for art deco, and this lovely cinema by snaillad really caught my eye. I love the exterior walls on this, at once simplistic and cleverly detailed. But the real magic is inside. This interior just makes me happy, with the high ceiling in the lobby, the bar and just check out that stadium seating. I would love to see a movie here.
