This was a treat to wake up to. I'm a kid of the 80's, when arcades ruled the world and nobody ever had spare quarters. This Bomberman MOC by 6kyubi6 is totally tubular (y'know, we really didn't say that). I especially like the controls, excellent use of the seed part of the Duel of Pirates. 1UP dude, 1UP.
There have been quite a few renditions of WALL•E in LEGO, many by some of my favorite builders. I think it's a testament to the excellent design and endearing qualities of a perfectly designed Pixar character. This version by Legonardo Davidy is pretty amazing, especially the SNOT work on his chest. Factor in that it was done in eight hours and, well, that's just stunning.
Matt Armstrong (monsterbrick) was one of the first AFOLs I met as I was discovering I wasn't alone in my adult obsession with plastic bricks. He opened my eyes (see what I did there?) to wondrous possibilities with our favorite toy and continues to delight us all with fanciful and offbeat MOCs like this one.
I love to see builders break out of their normal genres. This wizard from traditionally castle guy floodllama is lovely. The character himself is great, but what really sells this MOC is the use of 1x2 trans plates to great effect, especially above the hand. I can't imagine how fragile that is, but it's amazing.
Little known fact: I was a breakdancer. Yes, it's probably hard to imagine me poppin' and lockin', but it's true. I was even briefly in a dance crew and we weren't half bad, even won free pizza at Showbiz Pizza Place, but I digress. This MOC by oLaF LM certainly brings back some memories, I can practically hear Twilight 22 blasting out of this thing. Now where's my parachute pants...?
Soul Caliber was probably my favorite game on the Dreamcast (oh, how we miss you Dreamcast). Many many happy hours were spent pummeling opponents in that game. One of the stand out characters was Ivy, not only for her amazing segmented whip sword, but of course for her costume and her figure (yes, totally silly, and clearly designed by a man). But she could certainly deliver some punishment. This Iron Builder inspired rendition by Pepa Quin is instantly recognizable.
Mark of Falworth brings us this excellent MOC with a twist. If you look closely you'll see the entire thing rests on a footprint of 8x8 studs, which is one of the categories of the Classic Castle Global Challenge VI. It's also part of a bigger story which I actually don't know anything about, but from what I gather after reading the description it's an epic tale.
Tested should be familiar to all you fellow nerds out there. It's basically the online home of the Mythbusters and friends. Well, they have a little segment that's fairly new called the LEGO Mystery Build, where they put together a small custom kit. Carlmerriam's latest MOC is their logo, and it's spiffy.
Within the LEGO community we tend to glorify new part usage but not always unique MOCs that fall outside of the normal LEGO themes of space, castle, city, Star Wars, etc. Builder robuko has succeeded in both NPU and building outside the box with his latest creation, Serpentine Hall. While technically a castle build for the ongoing Eurobricks Guilds of Historica building challenge this structure transcends the classic castle theme and really puts it into a class of its own.
6kyubi6 and oLaF LM continue to battle it out with the hemisphere seed part in their Duel of Pirates over at Brick Pirate. Here they become classic skate wheels, but the real star of this MOC is that board. The curved ends and brick-built graphics are awesome.
While wandering through Designer Con back in November, Guy Himber (V&A Steamworks) and I stumbled upon an artist named Jason Chalker. He had some great pieces on display and his Pimp2-D2 caught our eye. Now Guy has recreated this masterpiece at minifigure scale.
The people behind the book LEGO Space: Building The Future continue to amaze and please us with enticing little shots that didn't make the cut. I was privileged enough to experiment with photographing some of the fabulous MOCs in this book, and I truly wish I could have been there for all the shoots. If you don't have this book yet you're missing out.
It's one thing to instantly recognize an object, it's another to realize it's much, much bigger or smaller than you first expected. I think builder Carlmerriam is just messing with us, playing with scale as well as expertly building. Not only is this toothbrush crazy realistic, it's colossal. It's a total mind-bender.
This shot by samsofy speaks to me. I've spent SO much time in the past 25 years on green screen stages, but never with a group of Sith lords. I love that this is lit, not only with some cleverly built Lifelites, but that there's a grip holding a reflector, classic. Now, what are we going to do about that heinous green spill on that helmet?
Don't you just hate it when an all-powerful supernatural being tries to take over the world? Meet Sauron, from Middle Earth. He's the tall, dark and ambitious type, with big plans for Mordor and whatever else realms he might just, you know, take by force with an orc army. This version by Legonardo Davidy doesn't pose much threat though, you could just pop that one ring off and poof, he's back in the parts bin.
I feel like I am breaking some sort of unwritten rule by misquoting one movie to describe another unrelated movie for this post's title. But who cares when it fits so well, right? right?
Anywho, what a great build featuring one of the iconic scenes from Back To The Future? Seriously, this build has it all including many of the minor details from the original movie set such as the plutonium storage container easter egg.
The Snowspeeder from The Empire Strikes Back is one of my favorite Star Wars ships. I've always found the faceted design and back-to-back cockpit really appealing. And it's just cool, ya know? This Technic design by drakmir rivals the UCS set for sheer awesomeness. Let's all back it on Cuusoo and get it into our hot little hands!
The holidays are over, but there's still some Christmas cheer to spread around. TBB's own Nannan Z. has conjured up a charming little story of Santa's visit to the Ninjago dojo. The sticker use here is brilliant, and I love a MOC that tells a story. One glance and you know everything that's going on here.
WALL-E is one of my favorite Pixar movies. Not only does it have a charming story with lovable characters and laughs as well as tugs on the heart strings. But one of the things I love the most about it was it was different and risky. And while I can't say this MOC by Legohaulic is risky, it has everything else going for it that the movie does, it's awesome.
