We're Looking For A Few Good Nerds

nerdly_sam.jpg

Do you like LEGO? Do you spend way too much time browsing Flickr and MOCpages? Do your friends consider you the funny type? Ever been shoved in a locker or blow the grading curve? Would you rather attend SDCC than baseball camp? Know who played Wedge Antilles? Congratulations, you're our kind of nerd!

BrickNerd is looking for contributors. If you think you've got the right stuff gather some writing samples and send an email to tommy@bricknerd.com

Just Shoot It

I love this. I get questions all the time on photography and camera gear and I usually have the same first question "what's your budget?" It really doesn't matter these days what camera you use. I've seen stunning shots from an iPhone and terrible ones from a Canon 5D. Lighting isn't terribly difficult either, you can get by with simple desk lamps. The one constant, the one thing that matters is time. If you're in a hurry to get your MOC on Flickr, you can expect it to be a bad shot. Take your time, look critically at the images. Don't be afraid to take a shot, look at it on your computer and then go back and shoot again. I do this all the time, so do professionals, and so should you. Every MOC poses it's challenges in photography, just take your time and experiment and you'll be surprised how great your pictures can be. Take a look at this simple setup by SuckMyBrick, and then go take a peek at their pictures...nuff said.

Merry Christmas From BrickNerd!

It's Christmas morning, I've got my Star Wars jammies and killer rabbit slippers on, the fire is crackling and soon we'll be opening presents. As I reflect on the past year I am filled with joy and happiness. Thank you all for visiting BrickNerd, watching my videos, hanging out with me and encouraging me to pursue this wonderfully ridiculous endeavor. I look forward to the year ahead and I hope you'll all be there with me. Merry Christmas!

Have You Started Your Holiday Shopping Yet?

Hey readers, the silly season is upon us. Pretty soon you won't be able to escape the holiday music and I'll be watching A Christmas Story over and over.

If you shop online please consider supporting BrickNerd and using the links here on the website. You get the stuff you were going to get anyway, and BrickNerd gets a few cents towards stocking stuffers. Every little bit helps.

Brick Or Treat!

Halloween is upon us, and while there are the classic costumes like witches, cowboys and ghosts, there are kids out there (and awesome parents) who take it to the next level. For instance Elijah, Aliyah and Jonah here at LEGOLAND CA today. You can have your ninjas and transformers, these kids are Footi from the Mixels, a Nixel and Olivia from LEGO Friends, excellent!

Jawas And Bricks, It Was Meant To Be

It's no secret I'm a Star Wars fan, and when you combine Star Wars and LEGO, it's like magic. It's like mac and cheese, it's like beer and pizza, it's like tea and biscuits. They just go together. Now the fine folks at Tee Fury have combined them and put them on a t-shirt. Awesome and t-shirts go together pretty well too. You've got one day to snag this, go now! Utini!

It's Nerdly's Birthday!

Yes, it was one year ago today that BrickNerd officially launched. It's been a crazy year, and I can't thank all of you enough for your support. I'd love to flood you with some amazing stats like number of posts, Likes on Facebook and stuff like that, but I haven't had time to gather any. I can tell you it's been a ton of fun, and you all rock! I have big plans for this year and I hope you'll all be there. Thanks for visiting!

Did You Spot Any Of These MOCs?

When the live action scene was shot last year in Los Angeles the producers of The LEGO Movie put out a "MOC casting call" to local groups. Many talented AFOLs responded and now their work is on the big screen. I don't know which is more mind-boggling, that I know these artists and have actually held some of these MOCs, or that I didn't spot a single one when I watched the movie last week.

Wyldstyle

We've never covered LEGO cosplay here on BrickNerd, but that's about the change. For the uninitiated, cosplay is basically "dress up like your favorite character". I know that's overly simplistic, and that dedicated cosplayers literally spend months if not years perfecting their costumes. This Wyldstyle costume by SunlitEquinox is awesome. So is she a DJ?

Way Cool Video From Way Cool Books

If you've read my reviews of the Amazing Vehicles books (you have, haven't you?) then you know I'm a fan. Well, this video is every bit as awesome as the books. No, you won't learn to build them from it, but if you can appreciate excellent animation and groovy beats, check this out.
