In Memory

Jens Nygaard Knudsen passed away. You may not recognize his name, but if you’re reading this blog you know his work. Jens was initially a designer at LEGO and quickly became Chief Designer from 1968 until 2000.  He designed early town sets and was Mr. Space having his hand in the Space lines from the Classic era up to M-Tron and what started as Sea-Tron which later became Aquanauts. Also he is credited with inventing the Minifigure! Mark Stafford posted his article (Brick Journal #6 2009) we he talks to Jens and Designer Niels Milan Pedersen on his flickr stream in memory (page 1, page 2, & page 3). The article has many pictures of concept models that Jens and Niels created. Mark will be forwarding comments on the flickr pages to Jens family and has started #NygaardMemorialFleet for anyone who wants to build a memorial spaceship.

Shed Some Light On Hogwarts

Those mad geniuses at Brickstuff have done it again. As if LEGO 71043 Hogwarts wasn't impressive enough, now you can trick it out with another stunning lighting and sound kit from Brickstuff. And this isn’t your typical “stuff it with way too bright LEDs” kit we see so much of these days, it’s seriously high tech and incredibly well thought out. Brickstuff took over six months developing it, including the development of a whole new controller board. It’s the most advanced kit they’ve ever offered, surpassing even the stunning Millennium Falcon kit. And it’s not just a bunch of lights that turn on and off, it’s storytelling. The whole kit is designed from the ground up to bring the castle to life, not just make it visible in the dark. And once you add your own sounds to it, you will swear school is in session. The kit is so innovative Brickstuff has created it’s own website, lightmycastle.com to showcase it. The kits are available for pre-order now, but there’s a limited supply of “mega-bundles” so act fast.

Bricks Of Character Available Now

Long about 10 years ago I attended by first LEGO convention, BrickCon. It was there I made my first AFOL friend, Iain Heath, and we’ve been buddies ever since. During that con we decided our MOCs didn’t really belong anywhere, so we commandeered a section of unused tables in the back and set up our character based pieces. It was a hit with the public and we decided it should be a thing every year, and a new category was born, Bricks of Character. We’ve both been evangelists of pop culture and character builds ever since ( you may have noticed just a few on this very website)

Well fast forward 10 years and Iain is taking his builds to the next level, and sharing the character building and pop culture experience with everyone with the release of a select few of his brilliant creations marketed under the Bricks of Character brand. Who does’t want a porg on their desk? Or a poop emoji? Well you can have the first three (and more to come!) from Amazon, get yours today!

Coraline's Pink Palace

One of the highlights of San Diego Comic Con for me was the Laika Experience. The stop motion movie studio Laika took over a space a couple blocks from the convention center in the historic Gaslamp District and converted it into a miniature version of their studio in Portland. In addition to tons of excellent displays of props, sets and figures from many of their films, they had a functioning model shop and shooting stage, with artists on hand to demonstrate and answer questions. They even had free themed ice cream when you exited. But I'm here to tell you about something at the beginning of the tour, visitors waiting in the queue got a great view of this fabulous LEGO Ideas hopeful from Laika's very own Holly Webster, Coraline's Pink Palace.

Yes, it is generally the policy of BrickNerd not to feature LEGO Ideas campaigns unless it's very special circumstances. For instance a major stop motion movie studio displaying a set built by one of it's employees at a special venue at the craziest comic con on the planet. Holly's version of the apartments has all the charm of the original, which is easy to verify because the real set was just a few steps away.

There's even a full set of custom minifigures made with the assistance of the talented Jared Burks, featuring Coraline, Other Mother, Other Father, Bobinsky, Wybie, Coraline Doll, and the cat. The back of the house splits open to reveal a detailed interior of rooms any fan of the film will recognize instantly.

The LEGO Ideas campaign is going now, and thankfully is still early enough that it has a strong chance of making it, especially with the exposure from this past week. Head on over to LEGO Ideas to cast your vote and make this wonderful set a reality. I'd like to give a huge shout out to Holly for granting us access to not only her set, but the fascinating and awesome Laika Experience, it was unforgettable.

Newsweek Celebrates LEGO

The LEGO brick is 60, and the minifigure is 40, and I'm right in the middle between them. I'm not sure what the significance of that is, but I find it interesting. It also means I was the perfect age when the Minifigure was introduced, and I've loved them ever since. And I'm not alone in that love, the world has been captivated with LEGO for over half a century, and Newsweek is celebrating that with a special edition. They were kind enough to send us a preview issue, and let me tell you, you're all in for a treat. It hits newsstands next week, be sure to pick up an issue or order it here.

Our pals over at Beyond the Brick are hosting a contest that pretty much every AFOL wants to win, a trip to Billund to see the LEGO house, and attend Skærbæk Fan Weekend! They want you to get creative and reimagine a LEGO set, big or small, and post pictures to the official Flickr group. Watch the video and read all about it here, then get building!

The House From A Christmas Story Reaches 10k

Just in time for lovely, glorious Christmas (around which the entire kid year revolves) this LEGO Ideas campaign by twrt0es has reached the 10,000 mark! This means we may all soon have a chance to own this amazing reproduction of Ralphie's house. It may not be an official Red Ryder 200 shot range model air rifle with a compass in the stock and this thing which tells time, but I'd certainly love one of these sets under the tree. Fingers crossed!

The BrickFormers Contest

Are you a Transformers fan? Have you ever thought about building your own, fully transformable figure from the Transformers universe? Well, now's your chance! PsychoBrick is hosting his very own contest for the purpose of testing your skills as a Transformer designer. Each contestant must design a single, functioning Transformers figure. This contest is open to anyone in the world, but unfortunately the prize (which is very cool, I might add) will only be shipped to a winner in the U.S. Contest ends on January 17th! If you're interested in participating, check out the contest's Flickr Group, or visit PsychoBrick's YouTube channel for rules and information!

Nathaniel Stoner

My name is Nathaniel Stoner, and I am an very active LEGO builder.  I mostly build in the themes of castle and science-fiction, but I also dabble in other genres and create occasional random MOC's (My Own Creations).

When I was younger, I would get and build small LEGO sets for my birthday, but I was never really into them.  When they fell apart, I would become frustrated attempting to put them back together and would throw them in a box in my closet.  I couldn't stand them!

Then, miraculously, I became addicted to the LEGO brick later in my teen years.  Ever since, I have continued to build up (pun intended) my collection of bricks and to expand my knowledge of techniques and building skills.  LEGO is truly more than a toy, its an art form and a way to express yourself.

For the most part, I collect LEGO Star Wars (mainly the minifigs), which is probably my favorite LEGO theme.  I have a fairly decent collection, including some of the original 1999 sets, such as the Snowspeeder, X-Wing, and Naboo starfighter.  I also collected LEGO the Lord of the Rings when those sets first came out.  The minifigs are great, and the story remains one of my favorites ever.

My hope is to inspire other young (and perhaps even older) LEGO builders to unleash their inner creativity!  You can find me on my Flikr here

Star Wars X Building Contest

Our pals at FBTB are challenging you to build ships based on the Star Wars alphabet aurebesh. Yeah, those random characters you see all over the Star Wars universe is actually an alphabet, and you can decode any of those messages. All you have to do is pick your favorite glyph (and there's lots of fun ones to choose from!) and build a ship inspired by it. They're giving away some awesome prizes too in the form of X-Wings, including the discontinued 10240 Red Five X-wing Starfighter! Final contest submission must posted to the official contest forum thread no later than 11:59:59PM PST Sunday December 3rd, 2017.

We're also super excited to announce that FBTB is a last minute sponsor of Nerdvember and will be kicking in some vintage LEGO sets to the prize pool. You have a lot of building to do, get to it!

Build to Give!

As the holiday season is approaching, we are reminded that this is a time of giving and being with those who are important to us. LEGO itself is promoting Build to Give, a way that people around the world can help give LEGO to children. Partnering with UK based charity organization, LEGO reports that: "The team at Fairy Bricks aim to visit over 100 hospitals throughout the UK and their army of elf-like helpers will be on hand delivering the LEGO gifts to the thousands of children who will be spending this Christmas in hospitals."

How can you get involved? Well, LEGO itself is hosting several events at select locations where people can help support the cause. By creating and sharing a holiday decoration build, LEGO will donate additional LEGO sets to children in need this holiday season. (Check out LEGO's official Facebook post to see a list of events, and additional information.) If you aren't able to attend anything in person, no problem! Create something at home and share it with LEGO using the hashtag #buildtogive! It's things like this that make us honored to be a part of the LEGO community. Spread the word and help give to those in need of holiday spirit!

Sincerely,

BrickNerd Contributors

SHIPtember 2016

No, that's not the wrong date, these are the 80 entries from last year compiled into a gigantic poster by Brixnspace. And while it's pretty nifty here, you need click through to see it in high resolution to really appreciate all the SHIPs. And if that's not enough you can download the ultra high-res file (seriously, it's 14400x8400), which can be printed at full poster size.
