May The 4th Be With You

Yup, it's May the 4th, and Star Wars nerds the world over are celebrating. It makes my geek heart soar that we've all banded together to make this a thing. This isn't Hallmark selling cards, this isn't Walmart selling cheap hats and party blowers, it isn't even Lucasfilm and Disney cashing in. It's fans, like me, just saying "I love Star Wars" in as many ways as they possibly can. This cheese wedge mosaic by hilaryleung is clever and awesome.

That's No Moon...

As we settle in for Star Wars Day Eve (that's a thing, isn't it?) I take a random glance at my Flickr feed and was delighted to discover this, the Friends Star from pricey73! It seems to be the absolute polar opposite of it's Imperial counterpart in all ways with the exception of shape. But really, who would build a giant space station that's shaped like a cube?

The Discovery Outside Walter Chang's Market

If you haven't seen it, Tremors is an awesome movie. It has wit, sarcasm, humor, drama, gritty filmmaking and of course giant subterranean bloodthirsty monsters. Oh, and Kevin Bacon is in it, and everything's better with bacon. In this scene, brilliantly recreated in micro scale by Grantmasters, our cast discovers that there's something very odd going on, and strange creatures are possibly behind it.

Chibi Bantha

Well, there are two bantha down there but I don’t see any...wait a second, they’re sandpeople alright, I can see one of them now

Oh chibi form factor, is there anything you can't make cute? This adorable chibi bantha from vitreolum is a little early for Star Wars day, but I'm not complaining. As far as I'm concerned the entire month of May is international Star Wars month. So how are you celebrating?

Setting The Mood

I realize that cinematic lighting isn't appropriate for photographing most MOCs, but when it is, this is how it's done. LEGOMINDED perfectly sets the mood in this dark and dank place using a principal of lighting that is often overlooked, negative space. Sometimes what you don't see is just as, if not more, important than what you do see. Can't you hear the sporadic water drips, the faint hiss of steam from a nearby boiler, the white noise of the pipes overhead, the scurry of an unseen rodent. This is how you set a mood.

Nerdy Inside 😃

Never Never Land

Summer is almost here, and that means theme park season. You all know what a Disney geek I am, and I'll be there several times in the next few months, but if this place existed, I would visit it too. Welcome to Never Never Land, a wondrous park dreamed up by builder Keith Reed. It's got everything I love in a park, from fun rides and amazing attractions, to stunning decor and a stunt show! I think it would be right at home in Disneyland, and I would be there in a heartbeat.

Keeping Up With The Jones'

This is one of my favorite scenes in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Indy and his dad's daring escape via motorcycle and sidecar. The scene has everything, excitement, drama, humor and some great stunts. I mean, who doesn't like watching Nazi's crash motorcycles? Builder Mad physicist perfectly captures the moment with this brilliant MOC.

Bonewagon

I never played Grim Fandango. When it came out in 1998 I was an Amiga user and waited patiently for a port that never came. But I was a fan of all of Lucasarts' adventure games and I know this one was fantastic. This MOC by legorevival is also fantastic, and while we generally don't feature digital builds here on BrickNerd, this one is so superbly lit and rendered it just had to be blogged. Those exhaust pipes are awesome!

Shaun The Sheep

Fun facts about sheep

  • A group of sheep is known as a herd, flock or mob.
  • Sheep like to stay close to others in a herd which makes them easier to move together to new pastures.
  • There are over 1 billion sheep in the world.
  • Sheep have a field of vision of around 300 degrees, allowing them to see behind themselves without having to turn their head.
  • When stop-motion animated they can be especially amusing.
  • When built in LEGO by Palixa And The Bricks they are irresistible.

Galactic Nautilus

Builder Sheo brings us an elegant and stunning craft that looks like it came off the cover of Air & Space magazine. There's a lot to like about this ship but for me the stand out feature is the simple but super effective use of the triangular sign pieces. As you can see in the rear view they're just alternating back and forth and offset in rows, but the effect is excellent.
