BrickNerd Pledge Drive 2015!

SHIPtember is here, Nerdvember is right around the corner, and BrickCon is before that, LiveBuilds are planned and we've got a ton of animation to finish for Art of the Brick: DC Comics. The coffers are their usual state of empty but once again we have all this cool stuff laying around the studio. It worked pretty well last year so lets do it again, it's time for a pledge drive!

Let's be quite clear, like last year this isn't a raffle or a purchase, this is you supporting all the things we do here at BrickNerd, and us surprising several of you with tokens of our appreciation like we've done in the past. It will be fairly random, but I can say there is a system and the greater the support, the better the odds and the perk.

Among the things in our big box of love is badge bricks, stickers, BrickNerd glasses, BrickNerd Studios shirts, books, poly bags, Nerdlettes, frames from the original BrickNerd set and various small LEGO sets. I'm also giving away the Batmobile from Batman vs Superman! As well as other props and models from various BrickNerd Studios animation projects.

And if this all goes really well, maybe just maybe I'll get to go to BrickCon after all (fingers crossed).

Johnny Five

I'll say one thing for Iron Builder, it makes my job easy, Today we're getting retro with some 80's robotic action. This is Johnny Five from the classic movie Short Circuit by Pepa Quin. I've always been a fan of this robot. Short Circuit came out when I was graduating high school and planning on going into the film industry...to do animatronics. It's hard to understate how inspiring this work was to me.

It's the most wonderful time of the year!

Fellow denizens of space, SHIPtember is finally upon us! Test your resolve and mettle in a 30 day, no-holds barred battle of the builders! Boys will become men! Men will become champions! Champions will rise! The chaff will be unceremoniously culled from the wheat! Feast your eyes upon this year's trophy!

Seriously Huge Trophy

For the uninitiated - SHIPtember is a yearly challenge for any builder to try his hand at a SHIP within 30 days. A rather daunting task, as SHIP building is fraught with peril, frustration, and crumbling battlecruisers. Visit The Shipyard for official rules. Go ahead. Try it. You know you want to.

Test Flight Preparations

This is gorgeous, it's like a scene from a movie. I love everything about this awesome shot by agaethon29, the build, the lighting, the composition, everything. I am instantly drawn in and want to know more about what's going on. Take note space builders, this is how to shoot your models for a cinematic or narrative presentation, beautiful!

By the power of Grayskull!

Vitreolum is on an absolute roll - he's been blogged twice by BrickNerd in the past week, but that's not going to stop me from highlighting this amazing micro Grayskull. This combines my already overwhelming microscale obsession with a heart-string tugging blast from my childhood. Now to go find the correct parts so I can have my own!

Humanoid Utility Robot

For some little understood reason, man is obsessed with creating humanoid robots like this one from David Steeves. I guess it's logical if you want them to live in our world, work in our factories and interact with our machines they should be like us (I'd like to see BB-8 try and run a lawn mower). And it's just common sense and courtesy that when they finally become sentient and realize what jerks we are (and consequently wipe us out) everything is already compatible with them.

Holy Retrospective batman!

I love this! The batmobile has taken many live-action shapes, and it seems that filmmakers feel it's their duty to give us a new one with every new movie. But no matter which is your personal favorite (I'm sorta partial for the Burton one myself) you have to love them all at this mini scale by builder SPARKART. And all the figures to with them is a perfect finishing touch.

To the Batmobile!

Some Crackin' Good Archeology

Some things I brought back from the UK: I started drinking my tea with milk again, I discovered McVitties Rich Tea biscuits, I won't shut up about the toasted cheese sandwich at Borough Market and I watch Time Team. I recently found out that almost every episode is on YouTube and have been watching whenever I can. So when I saw this MOC by peggyjdb all I could hear was Phil's charming thick accent.

Burger, Fries, Lemon Coke Please...

I've stated my weakness for a classic greasy spoon diner here before. So it's no mystery why I find this latest Iron Builder MOC from Pepa Quin so appealing. But this goes beyond just sentiment here, this is an outstanding build. Look at the simulated seams in the upholstery done with half stud offsets, the classic metal bands around the benches, the bolts on the base of the table and the condiments, this is stunning work.

Scourge Of The Gray Dragon

Normally if you heard the phrase "it's a dragon attacking a village, setting it on fire" you would imagine a MOC with 5-10 thousand pieces, but not if you're Grantmasters. There's what, 32 pieces here? But it tells the story so well with clever part use and construction in a tiny and effective micro MOC. That dragon is awesome, and as for the villagers...well, I suppose that's what you get for building your village out of flammable materials.

Review - The LEGO Adventure Book - Volume 3

Review - The LEGO Adventure Book - Volume 3

Megs and Brickbot are back for more building adventures in The LEGO Adventure Book volume 3, the latest of this quirky and fun series from No Starch Press. I'm so happy for my friend and author Megan Rothrock for getting to do what she loves, and when you read one of these books you can sense that love. She brings together a unique combination of top notch builders from around the globe, building instructions for awesome models and fun story telling that appeals to all ages. All presented in a comic-book like narrative featuring caricatures of the builders and a host of other characters.

The Droid You're Looking For

R2-D2 certainly had a way of getting into trouble didn't he? Luckily for him he also had a way of saving the day, so that sorta makes up for it. On this fateful day though, the Jawas got the better of him. But he was reunited with C-3PO, and then it was off to the Lars homestead, and you know the how that turned out. Nice build I Scream Clone.

Through The Mirror

This was one of those "wait a second, that's LEGO?" moments this morning. It's also one of those "AHHHHH" moments. I don't know what it is about mirrors and the human psyche, but we're perpetually crafting disturbing images and stories about them. And thanks to Pepa Quin we have another legend to contemplate, I'm going to name her Mildred, and she continually judges your water temperature.
